Dr. Mine Eren, Associate Professor of German at Randolph-Macon College, will introduce the film (October 27, Parents & Friends, 7pm) and lead a discussion of it following the viewing.  Dr. Eren, of Turkish descent, grew up in Germany and received her doctorate in German Studies from Brown University.  She is a specialist in German cinema, particularly the films of Fatih Akin, and is interested in multiculturalism and the role of Turkish minority culture in Germany. Full Story...

Since its beginning two years ago, the Hampden-Sydney College Carnival festival reappeared back on campus on the night of February 15, 2007 at the Tiger Inn. Organized by the International, German, French and Spanish clubs as well as the CAC, Hampden-Sydney students were both entertained by amazing music and delicious foods as a way to help welcome in the Spring. Hampden-Sydney Celebrates the Day of the Dead

On Wednesday, November 1, 2006, the Spanish Club in association with the new International House threw Hampden- Sydney College’s first and very successful celebration of Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. This holiday is traditionally celebrated on November 1st and the Spanish Club members transformed the International House to show the festivity and liveliness of the Día de los Muertos with delicious food and exotic decorations.Full Story...


Professor Dirk Johnson at Governor's Foreign Language Academies
Since 1986, the Virginia Department of Education has sponsored the Governor's Foreign Language Academies, summer residential programs for Virginia's most motivated and talented foreign language students.  This summer, the academies' twentieth anniversary year, I had the honor to direct the Immersion Program in German (45 students, 4 teachers, 6 Resident Assistants) held on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond. Carnival On Our Campus

The French, German, and Spanish Club in collaboration with the International Club organized a carnival in the Tiger Inn. The festive celebration, although in an academic setting, portrayed a blend of culture that was elevated by the colorful display of costumes, music, and dance, which epitomized the feeling and mood we normally associate with Carnival whenever we think of it. Professor Dirk Johnson and his family are spending the summer in the quaint university town of Nijmegen, Holland. With a summer research grant from Hampden-Sydney College, Professor Johnson is able to pursue research into the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche and its relationship to the science of Charles Darwin. For Dieudonne Afatsawo the route between Ghana and Hampden-Sydney College was not a direct one. Dr. Afatsawo joined the Hampden-Sydney faculty in the Fall of 2000 as Assistant Professor of Modern Languages after a career that took him from his homeland to Spain and southern California.
