He hopes to monitor and direct cell growth with organic semi-conductors, research which may give new insight into neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and mad cow disease.

The reports will appear in US News and World Report in September 2008. MICHAEL PALMORE, JAMIE RANKIN ’99, BILL WAINSCOTT ’96, CLARK COULBOURN ’97, and MICHAEL AIDE ’96, who are regular players in the friendly Ponce de Leion Invitational, were "ambushed" by Golf Magazine before the start of their 2008 tournament at the Sea Island Resort in St. Simons Island, Georgia. Now in its sixth year, the Ponce de Leon Invitational pits four teams against one another in several different formats as the players take part in "the search for eternal youth and great golf with friends." Their ambush appeared in the April 2008 issue of Golf Digest magazine.

Capt. KING H. DIETRICH retired from the Navy on August 15, following a career of over 29 years. A Surface Warfare Officer, Capt. Dietrich served in a variety of positions both at sea and ashore during his career, and is one of only two officers in the history of the Navy to have commanded three AEGIS cruisers: USS TICONDEROGA (CG 47) from 1998-2000, USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG 62) from 2005-2006, and USS SHILOH (CG 67) from 2006-2007. He also had command of the Navy's largest overseas base, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan, from 2003-2005. Following retirement leave, he plans to work in the defense industry in Northern Virginia.

KENNETH M. JOHNSTON was an extra in the HBO Miniseries John Adams. Mr. Johnston's hobby of fifing and drumming began as a member of the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes & Drums. Ten years ago, he formed a group of CW F&D Alumni called Williamsburg Field Musick Fifes & Drums. Over the years they have performed in Germany and in many states across the country. They have performed for Presidents, Senators, and celebrities. They perform over 300 times per year for weddings, corporate events, and private parties. Mr. Johnston serves as President of the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes & Drums Alumni Association.

He then earned his law degree and spent much of his law career with the U.S. Army. In retirement he became a master electrician and electrical contractor.

FRANK OTEY SMITH of Montvale died on July 19, 2008. He attened Hampden-Sydney and played on the tennis team. He graduated from the University of Michigan and served in the Army during World War II. After earning a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he taught government in the Roanoke City Schools until his retirement in 1981. He then served as a docent at Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest for more than a decade.

LEIGH B. HANES, JR., of Roanoke died on August 15, 2008. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College, Mr. Hanes worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the day and attended the University of Maryland law school at night. In 1951, he joined his father's law office, Hanes and Hanes. He served on the Roanoke City Council for three years, after which he joined the U.S. Attorney's Office. He served as a U.S. district court clerk for almost a decade. 1969, Mr. Hanes was named U.S. attorney for the Western District of Virginia, a position he held until his retirement in 1975. During his "retirement" he acted as commonwealth's attorney for Botetourt County from 1976 to 1979, served as a special counsel in the 1980s and became interim clerk for Botetourt Circuit Court in 1991. He is remembered for being well-spoken and measured in the courtroom, as a regular reader and storyteller, and for having a mechanic's instinct for taking things apart. His grandfather, William Thompson, graduated from Union Seminary when it was located at Hampden-Sydney. His father Leigh B. Hanes graduated in 1918. He was followed to The Hill by his grandsons Dr. Mark E. Feldmann, Jr., ’98 and Matthew Hanes Feldmann ’01. He is the father-in-law of Mark E. Feldmann, Sr., ’70.

IRMA C. SPRINKLE, a longtime friend of Hampden-Sydney College, died on June 9, 2008. A graduate of John B. Stetson University, she worked for Pan American Airlines, Marion College, and Emory & Henry College. Mrs. Sprinkle was one of the first women Elders at Royal Oak Prebyterian Church, a member of the Marion Book and Study Club, and a charter member of the Smyth County Community Hosptial Board of Directors, serving from 1967 to 1997. In 2001, Mrs. Sprinkle established the Willis McCollum Sprinkle scholarship at Hampden-Sydney for students in pre-medical studies with a $1.3 million donation, at the time it was the largest single gift ever made to the college.
