ROOKER J. WHITE, JR., of Baltimore, Maryland, died on October 2, 2008. He was a member of Chi Phi fraternity.

Frank MacDonald Morton Jr. Water View VA
Cmdr. FRANK MACDONALD MORTON, JR., (USN Ret.) of Water View died on October 4, 2008. In 1941, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy where his duty included three tours at BuSandA; instruction at Freight Transportation School; the Armed Forces Staff College; staff duty with ComServPac and ComWest SeaFront; and sea duty as Suppy Officer onboard the USS Springfield and the USS Shenandoah. He was instrumental in the implementation of the Lend-Lease program during World War II. After 24 in the Navy, he retired in 1964 and pursued a livelihood in the oyster business. He was an active member Christ Church and served on the Vestry.

Lester E. Andrews Farmville VA
LESTER E. ANDREWS, SR., of Farmville died on September 16, 2008. An alumnus of Hampden-Sydney College, he also served on the Board of Trustees from 1988 to 1999, as well as on the Board of the Hampden-Sydney Music Festival. He was an active member of Farmville Baptist Church, which he joined in 1928. He served at the church as a trustee, chairman of the board of deacons, and life deacon. Mr. Andrews served on the Board of Visitors of Longwood College and as president of the Longwood College Foundation. He was also chairman of the Prince Edward County School Board and on the board of Fuqua School. Mr. Andrews was involved in many local civic groups, including Jaycees, Farmville Rotary Club, March of Dimes, the United Fund. He also served on the boards of Southside Community Hospital, Virginia National Bank, People's National Bank-Sovran, Farmville YMCA, Wedgewood County Club. Professionally, he was secretary/treasurer of Ladco Corporation, vice president of Farmville Manufacturing Company, Inc., vice president of Andrews Large Realty Corporation, and secretary/treasurer of Andrews, Large, and Whidden, Inc. In 1986, Mr. Andrews established The Frances Price Andrews Scholarship at Hampden-Sydney College in memory of his late wife.

Thomas Kyle Baldwin Lynchburg VA
THOMAS KYLE BALDWIN formerly of Farmville died on July 5, 2008. A 1940 graduate of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, Mr. Baldwin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to Farmville and began working with Baldwin's Stores, the company founded by his grandfather in 1890. At Hampden-Sydney, Mr. Baldwin was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and the Seven and a Half honor society. He served on the Hampden-Sydney College Board of Trustees and endowed the Baldwin Family Scholarship in 2006. Mr. Baldwin was a lifelong member of Johns Memorial Episcopal Church, an avid golfer, a private airplane pilot, and a hunting and wildlife enthusiast. He was a member of the Society of Cincinanati, the Farmville Lions Club, and a former trustee of Virginia National Bank.

David L. Greenlees Odessa TX
Dr. DAVID L. "DUSTY" GREENLEES of Odessa, Texas, died on May 14, 2008. His passion for medicine was sparked as a young boy by the compassionate treatment he received from a doctor prior to knee surgery at age seven. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College, he earned his medical degree from Tulane University in New Orleans. After his internships in California and Alabama, he served at Deshon General Hospital in Butler, Pennsylvania. It is also there that he met his wife Ester. Dr. Greenlees was a veteran or World War II and practiced family medicine for 40 years in Odessa, retiring in 1987. He enjoyed many years of rock hunting, lapidary work, music, skiing with grandchildren, and periodic mission trips to the Yucatan. Also, he was very active with his wife at First Presbyterian Church in Odessa.

Alfred H. Stuart Oak Park IL
DR. ALFRED H. STUART of Oak Park, Illinois, died on August 19, 2007. He was a scholarship student from the town of Farmville accepted at the age of 15. He was a member of Chi Beta Phi, the national scientific honor society (receiving the Grand Chapter Award in 1932), and Sigma Chi Sigma. After graduating at age 20, he attended the University of Virginia, earning his Ph.D in biochemistry in 1937. He worked as a research chemist in private industry in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and Connecticut until his retirement to Oak Park with his wife, Beatrice. He was a longtime member of the American Chemical Society.

Marvin K. Compher Tampa FL
Dr. MARVIN K. COMPHER, formerly of Richmond, died in Tampa, Florida, on April 14, 2008. Having graduated from Union Theological Seminary in 1940, Dr. Compher was pastor emeritus of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, where he served from 1965 until his retirement in 1981. He also served for a number of years as the president of the Tampa Ministerial Association. Before moving to Tampa, he served as a pastor in Covington, Virginia; Kingsport, Tennessee; Richmond, Virginia; and Elizabethton, Tennessee. While in Tennessee, he established six new churces and was awarded a doctor of divinity degree from King College in Bristol. He was author of two books. More Than a Farmhand—Like a Father was a tribute to an African-American man who served as a vital father figure after his own father's death at an early age. The Road I Would Take Again was Dr. Compher's autobiography.

Joseph Lee Hudson Arlington VA
JOSEPH LEE HUDSON of Arlington died on June 30, 2007. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, he worked for the Washington, D.C., government as a chemist monitoring the local rivers for pollution. During World War II, Mr. Hudson served in the Army Air Force as a meteorologist in the European Theater. After the war, he joined the National Weather Service, specializing in aviation and oceanic forecasting until his retirement in 1973. He was a member of the American Meteorological Socitey and the American Legion.

William D. Bundy Jr. Tazewell VA
WILLIAM D. BUNDY, JR., of Tazewell died on February 29, 2008. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at Hampden-Sydney and taught math and coached girls' basketball in Honaker after graduation. During World War II, he served with the 26th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron of the Hawkeye Group under the Fifth Air Force. After the war, he returned to Tazewell County and taught agricultural science to returning veterans before moving on to teach math at Richlands and Tazewell High Schools. He also farmed, raising sheep and cattle, and was an accomplished woodworker. He was active in the Virginia Farm Bureau, as well as the Lions Club, Elks, and American Legion. Mr. Bundy was also a member of Tazewell Baptist Church.

Russell Elwell Fox Hampdton VA
Dr. RUSSELL ELWELL FOX of Hampton died on February 3, 2008. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College summa cum laude, he won a research fellowship at the University of Virginia, where he earned his Ph.D in physics in 1942. His graduate work on uranium isotope seperation by ultracentrifuge was deemed crucial to the war effort and his Ph.D. thesis was classified secret until 1969. Dr. Fox accepted a post-doctoral position with Westinghouse Electric Corporation Research and Development Labs in support of the Manhattan Project. He stayed with Westinghouse's physics department and held many prominent positions. He was a member of Chi Phi fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, and a fellow of the American Physcial Society. Throughout his life, Dr. Fox was active in community, church, and charitable work. He was a lifelong member of Rotary International and a trustee of Bucknell University. He became a prominent sponsor and trustee of the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula and was a recognized contributor to the H.E.L.P. ministry to the poor and homeless. Dr. Fox endowed a scholarship at Hampden-Sydney College.

John Walter Eure Roanoke VA
JOHN WALTER EURE of Roanoke died on January 27, 2008. At Hampden-Sydney, he worked on the student newspaper and served as editor during his senior year. After graduating, he worked briefly for a newspaper in South Boston before joining The Roanoke Times in 1936. Except for service in the U.S. Army in 1943-46, he worked continuously for the Roanoke newspapers and their affiliated radio and televsion stations until his retirement in 1977. He then taught journalism at Virginia Tech, where his broad knowledge, high standards, and gentle sense of humor made him a favorite of many students. During is career, he created Roanoke's first professional news staff as news director for WDBJ radio. Mr. Eure helped obtain the FCC license for WDBJ-TV and established its news department. Later he became assistant to the president and then vice president of Times-World Corp. For 15 years, he was managing editor of The Roanoke World-News. Mr. Eure was a strong believer in community service and served in numerous organizations, inlcuding a term on the Roanoke City School Board. He was also active at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church. In 1959, he was named Father of the Year for Civic Affairs. A portion of Mr. Eure's estate will go toward an endowment for the student newspaper and the Union-Philanthropic Literary Society.

Winston Purnell Lewis Jr. Chesapeake VA
WINSTON PURNELL LEWIS, JR., of Chesapeake died on January 14, 2008. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and earned a graduate degree in education from The College of William & Mary in 1966. Mr. Lewis was retired from Norfolk-Western Railroad and Chesapeake City Public Schools. He was a member of Great Bridge Baptist Church, the South Norfolk Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Khedive Shrine Temple.

William McK. Jefferies Richmond VA
Dr. WILLIAM MCK. JEFFERIES of Richmond died on April 21, 2007. He earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Dr. Jefferies was a physician specializaing in endocrinology in the Cleveland, Ohio, area, then served as a clinical professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine from 1993 until his retirement. He was the author or co-author of 40 papers in clinical or research medical journals. Dr. Jefferies was the member of numerous professional organizations and a member of St. Marys United Methodist Church.

Robert Massie Boyd Jr. Virginia Beach VA
ROBERT MASSIE BOYD, JR., of Virginia Beach, died on December 27, 2007. He attended Hampden-Sydney and the University of Virginia. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and World War II. Mr. Boyd was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach and Princess Anne Country Club. He was the owner of Boyd Bluford Company, Wholesale Distributors, and had retired from there in 1993. After retirement, he initiated and became instrumental in the restoration of Boyd Tavern in Boydton. A lifelong lover of quail hunting, he was a founding member of the Pheasant Pluckers International.

William Thomas Hall Wilmington DE
Dr. WILLIAM THOMAS HALL of Wilmington, Delaware, died on December 1, 2007. He played football at Hampden-Sydney for four years and was a member of Kappa Alpha Order and Chi Beta Phi scientific fraternity. He graduated from Temple University for Medicine, was a fellow of the American College of Physicians, and was a diplomat for the American Board of Physicians. Dr. Hall's career covered 50 years in Wilmington, Delaware, in private practice in internal medicine and as administrator at the Veterans Hospital. Dr. Hall and his wife Lee retired to Lady Lake, Florida, in 1993. He is the brother of Dr. John H. Hall, Jr. ’37.

Louis E. Hubbard Virginia Beach VA
LOUIS E. HUBBARD of Virginia Beach died on November 24, 2007. He attended Hampden-Sydney College and graduated from Elon College. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and took part in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day. He was awarded the Legion of Merit Citation. After the Navy, Mr. Hubbard earned a Master's degree from the University of Virginia. He was hired by the Travelers Insurance Company and retired in 1984. After a part-time career as a state certified instructor in insurance courses, he retired again in 1996.

James D. Finley II Norfolk VA
JAMES D. FINLEY II of Norfolk died on November 28, 2007. He graduated from the law school of Washington & Lee University and practiced law with Vandeventer Black LLP until he received a commission in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve in 1941. He served in the Captain of the Ports Office in Norfolk until 1945 when he was discharged as a lieutenant commander. After the war, he joined his father's firm of Lowery D. Finley and Co., an insurance agency where he remained until he retired in 1983. He was also associated with Life Savings Bank and its predecessor Norfolk Federal Savings and Loan Association, serving on its board from 1942 until 1984. He is the uncle of Lowery D. Finley III ’63.
