1949 John Rochester Booth Petersburg VA JOHN ROCHESTER BOOTH of Petersburg died on January 7, 2008. He joined the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II and later returned to Hampden-Sydney College, where he was a member of Chi Phi fraternity. He earned a business degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. He owned and operated the Walnut Hill Launderette for 34 years. Mr. Booth was an avid bowler and named the Petersburg City Champion for several consecutive years in the late 1950s. 1949 Grant C. Sipp Albuquerque NM GRANT C. SIPP of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died on September 5, 2008. A retired landscaper, Mr. Sipp was a friendly and lively person who enjoyed the company of friends. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College, he rode a motorized bicycle from Virginia to Mexico City, an odyssey he would cherish his entire life. 1947 George Long Cooper Jr. Yorktown VA GEORGE LONG COOPER, JR., of Yorktown died on February 27, 2008. He served in the U.S. Navy as an aviation cadet. At Hampden-Sydney, he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and Omicron Delta Kappa honor society. Mr. Cooper worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in 1951 and was manager of the Peninusla District until he retired. He devoted much of his time and energy to the Salvation Army, the local food bank, and was president for many years of the Riverside Hospital Volunteers. 1947 James A. Sydnor Sr. Mannboro VA JAMES ALLEN SYDNOR, SR., of Mannboro died on June 18, 2008. He left Hampden-Sydney College afer his junior year to return to the family business, Sydnor's Store, in Mannboro. He served his church, community, and county in many capacities for more than 50 years, in addition to his work as merchant and postmaster. He is the father of William C. Sydnor ’77 and J. 1946 Hugh O. Wrenn Richmond VA Dr. HUGH O. WRENN of Richmond died on October 25, 2008. He attended Hampden-Sydney College before joining the Navy during World War II. He was a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry and the orthodontics program at Columbia University in New York. He maintained a private practice in Richmond from 1952 to 1988. Dr. Wrenn was an associate clinical professor of orthodontics at MCV until 1972. He was past president of the Richmond Dental Society, past president of the Virginia Orthodontic Society, a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, and a member of the American Dental Association. Dr. Wrenn was also a fellow of the International College of Dentists and of the Virginia Dental Association. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Commonwealth Club, the Country Club of Virginia, and the Princes Anne Country Club. He is the brother of Robert B. 1945 Charles Randolph Crews Radford VA Dr. CHARLES RANDOLPH CREWS of Radford died on November 8, 2008. He attended Hampden-Sydney College and earned his doctorate degree of dental surgery from the Medical College of Virginia. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. 1945 Henry H. Galusha Jr. Dinwiddie VA HENRY H. GALUSHA, JR., of Dinwiddie died on May 13, 2008. He left Hampden-Sydney College to join the U.S. Army during World War II. For his sevice he received three Battle Stars (Rhineland, Northern France, and Belgium), the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Bronze Star. After the war, he earned a degree in economics from the University of Virginia and worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation. Mr. Galusha later earned a master's degree in forestry from the University of Michigan. 1945 Ernest P. Gates Sr. Chesterfield VA The Hon. ERNEST P. GATES, SR., received a lifetime achievement award from the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors in December 2007. 1944 John Alexander Lewis Ruff Palo Alto CA JOHN ALEXANDER LEWIS RUFF of Palo Alto, California, died on June 7, 2008. In the Army, he served in Germany as a reporter and later an editor at Stars and Stripes. Ater the war, he continued his newspaper work and joined the Times-Picayune in New Orleans. He transferred to San Francisco where he was associated with Trinity Episcopal Church. He served as verger, lay reader, and curator of historical records. 1943 Elam W. Bosworth II Onancock VA Dr. ELAM WHITROW "TOM" BOSWORTH II of Onancock died on January 10, 2007. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College, he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served on the USS Windsor in the Pacific Theater. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1952 and began his medical practice in Lexington, where he also served as post surgeon at Virginia Military Institute. In 1963, he took a job on the Eastern Shore in Onancock where he stayed for the final 39 years of his career. As a general practictioner, Dr Bosworth made house calls every afternoon. He would check on his elderly patients, even when he wasn't scheduled to see them. While working in Onancock, Dr. Bosworth also served as the medical examiner for Accomack County, as well as a doctor for the jail and a nursing home. He is the father of Dr. James E. 1943 James Gwyn Peden Hickory NC JAMES GWYN PEDEN of Hickory, North Carolina, died on April 17, 2008. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College with honors and served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant on the USS Washington during World War II. During his career, Mr. Peden was vice president of Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Asheville and General Manager of the Hickory Bottling Plant. He was a consultant and property appraiser for Fist Savings and Loan of Hickory, where he also served as chairman of the board. He was a Catawba County Commissioner and a member and past president of the Hickory Rotary Club.

1942 George Henry Fulton Jr. Roanoke VA GEORGE HENRY FULTON, JR., of Roanoke died on October 4, 2008. He owned and operated Fulton Motor Company, a Chrysler dealership, for more than 50 years; he also owned Fulton White Truck Company in Roanoke for many decades. An accomplished golfer, Mr. Fulton won the 1954 Virginia State Amateur Championship and later that year broke Sam Snead's course record at the Cascades Golf Course in Hot Springs. He also played in the British Amateur championship and won the Roanoke City-County Golf Championship eight times. He was especially proud of his service as president of the Virginia State Golf Association. 1942 Thomas Martin Horsley Jr. Elizabeth NC Dr. THOMAS MARTIN HORSLEY, JR., of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, died on December 12, 2007. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College summa cum laude and received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was in the military during and after World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and rising to the rank of captain. Dr. Horsley practiced internal medicine in Elizabeth City for 32 years and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. Also, he served as president of Albemarle Hospital Medical Staff and president of the Pasquotank, Camden, Currituck, and Dare Medical Society. He served as the president of the Richmond Bar Association, as a member of the Council and the Executive Committee of the Virginia State Bar, and as a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association. 1942 Quellen McGuire Keith Columbia SC QUELLEN MCGUIRE KEITH of Columbia, South Carolina, and formerly of Spencer, West Virginia, died on January 15, 2008. Mr. Keith was a veteran of World War II and earned an M.S. in agriculture from the University of West Virginia. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farmers Home Administration, for more than 40 years. He was elected to two terms on the Roane County Commission, serving from 1988 to 2000. Mr. Keith was a member of the Spencer Rotary Club, Moriah Lodge 38 AF&AM, American Legion Post 21, and the Roane County Chamber of Commerce; he was the secretary for many years of the West Virginia Hereford Breeders Association. 1942 Joseph C. Kelley Sr. Crockett's Cove VA JOSEPH C. KELLY, SR., of Crockett's Cove died on November 28, 2007. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post #9. Mr. Kelley was a life-long Presbyterian and an elder emeritus at Wytheville Presbyterian Church, having served as a trustee. In 2003, he was recognized by Abingdon Presbytery as the Outstanding Senior Adult. 1942 Ira Benjamin Watson Jr. Hurricane WV The Rev. IRA BENJAMIN WATSON, JR., of Hurricane, West Virginia, died on May 26, 2008. He was a graduate of Union Theological Seminary and joined the U.S. Navy where he served as a chaplain during the Korean Conflict. He was pastor of Prentis Park Presbyterian Church for eight years before becoming the organizing and founding pastor of the Great Bridge Presbyterian Church. 1941 Matthew Lyle Lacy II South Hill VA Dr. MATTHEW LYLE LACY II died on August 19, 2008. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney, he taught in Dinwiddie County High Schools for 18 months. He earned his M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia in 1946 and was commissioned a 1st Lt. in the Medical Corps. He served at the Medical Field Service School in San Antonio, Texas, for two years and at Fort Lee Station Hospital for one year. He then served at McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond until 1954. From then until 1988, he practiced general surgery in Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill. He was on the Board of Directors of Blue Shield of Virginia for 15 years and was chairman of the board from 1969 to 1973. Dr. Lacy was an active Freemason, serving as the Master of the South Hill Lodge #297 on two occassions. He was grand master of the Grand Lodge of Virginia in 1979. Dr. Lacy was a ruling elder and Sunday school teacher at South Hill Presbyterian Church. He is the father of M. Lyle Lacy III ’69 and John W. 1941 Frank Otey Smith Montvale VA FRANK OTEY SMITH of Montvale died on July 19, 2008. He attened Hampden-Sydney and played on the tennis team. He graduated from the University of Michigan and served in the Army during World War II. After earning a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he taught government in the Roanoke City Schools until his retirement in 1981. 1940 William H. Boyd Columbia SC The Rev. Dr. WILLIAM H. BOYD of Columbia, South Carolina, died on January 23, 2008. He was a graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, and earned his doctorate from McCormick Theologial Seminary in Chicago. Dr. Boyd was a retired minister of the Persbyterian Church, USA, and served congregations in Andalusia, Alabama; Ware Shoals, South Carolina; Lake City, South Carolina; Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; and Elberton, Georgia. He also served as founding pastor of Saxe Gotha Presbyterian in Lexington, South Carolina. Dr. Boyd served as interim director of Thornwell Home for Children in Clinton, South Carolina; and internim senior pastor of Shandon Presbyterian, associate pastor at Eastminster Presbyterian in Columbia, South Carolina; and as interim pastor at a number of churches throughout South Carolina. 2008-01-25 10:55:00, 3985
1940 Lester L. Dillard Jr. South Boston VA LESTER L. DILLARD, JR., of South Boston died on June 20, 2008. He played basketball for four years at Hampden-Sydney. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was assigned to the USS Missouri, from which he saw the Japanese surrender. He graduated from the University of Richmond's T.C. Williams School of Law and joined the law firm that became Tuck, Dillard, Nelson & Dillard. He had the honor of meeting President Dwight D. Eisenhower and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. In April 2004, Mr. Dillard, an avid golfer, was inducted into the Halifax County-South Boston Sports Hall of Fame. He retired from law in 2006 at the age of 86. 2008-06-30 09:46:00, 4309
1940 Leigh B. Hanes Jr. Roanoke VA LEIGH B. HANES, JR., of Roanoke died on August 15, 2008. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College, Mr. Hanes worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the day and attended the University of Maryland law school at night. In 1951, he joined his father's law office, Hanes and Hanes. He served on the Roanoke City Council for three years, after which he joined the U.S. Attorney's Office. He served as a U.S. district court clerk for almost a decade. 1969, Mr. Hanes was named U.S. attorney for the Western District of Virginia, a position he held until his retirement in 1975. During his "retirement" he acted as commonwealth's attorney for Botetourt County from 1976 to 1979, served as a special counsel in the 1980s and became interim clerk for Botetourt Circuit Court in 1991. He is remembered for being well-spoken and measured in the courtroom, as a regular reader and storyteller, and for having a mechanic's instinct for taking things apart. His grandfather, William Thompson, graduated from Union Seminary when it was located at Hampden-Sydney. His father Leigh B. Hanes graduated in 1918. 1940 Carl William Nolde Richmond VA CARL WILLIAM NOLDE of Richmond died on April 12, 2008. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps. He spent his entire business career at Nolde Brother's Bakery, which was founded by his father John Henry Nolde in 1892. Mr. Nolde retired from the company in 1975 as executive vice-president. He is remembered for his constant smile and affinity for telling jokes. Though he was in charge of the sales department at Nolde Brothers, he regularly walked the assembly line to make sure production was going as it should.
