RONALD W. DAVIS edited Parts I, II and III of Handel's Messiah for an 80-minute performance with choir, soloists, orchestra, organ, and harpsichord held at Richmond's Ginter Park United Methodist Church where he is organist and director of music. The performance was held during the morning service on Sunday, December 16, 2007, (ADVENT III.) Major choral works have become a yearly tradition at Ginter Park UMC on Advent III.

Dr. JAMESON GEORGE BUSTON II was named the 2008 Outstanding Older Worker for Virginia at the annual Prime Time Awards, which is sponsored by the non-profit Experience Works. Though he officially retired in 2003, Dr. Buston provides medical care for thousands of indigient patients monthly through the Care-A-Van program sponsored by Bon Secours Richmond Health System. Dr. Buston is also an active supporter of the Hampden-Sydney Music Festival.

WILEY F. BOWER of Ravenna, Ohio, died on January 13, 2008. He attended Hampden-Sydney and earned his bachelor's degree from Concord College. He earned a Master's degree from Marshall University. Mr. Bower was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a retired high school athletics coach and English and history teacher. In his retirement, Mr. Bower operated a landscaping business.

He has been in the real estate business since 1959 and is an active member of his community, including the Lexington-Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce and the Virginia Horse Center. Mr. Mead has also served on the board of directors for Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

JAMES C. ROBERTS received the 21st annual Tradition of Excellence Award from the Virginia State Bar. The award recognizes a lawyer who embodies the highest tradition of personal and professional excellence and enhances the image of attorneys in Virginia. Mr. Roberts has spent his career with Troutman Sanders and its predecessor firms. As a student, he was a member of the Hampden-Sydney College football team until an injury sidelined him. He earned his law degree from the University of Richmond.

Dr. JOHN ARMSTRONG CROSS, JR., of Newport News died on October 16, 2007. He received his medical training at the Medical College of Virginia and had a long career as a general surgeon, including six years in partnership with his son, Marshall. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society and the Kappa Alpha Order. During his professional career, he was an active member of the Newport News Medical Society, the American College of Surgeons, and the International College of Surgeons. He was also a member of the Masons and the Kiwanis Club. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Newport News and served in numerous leadership roles.

Dr. WILLIAM SMITH DODSON of Chesapeake died on October 7, 2008. A graduate of the Medical College of Virginia, he was one of Portsmouth's first oral surgeons, practicing from 1960 to his retirement in 2005. He played an integral role in bringing the "Pokey Smokey" train to Portsmouth and was a former cub president and longtime Rotarian with both the Porstmouth and the North Suffolk Rotary Clubs. Dr. Dodson was honored in 2008 with the Simmons Award, which is presented to the Tidewater Dental Association member who has unselfishly given of his time and talent for the betterment of dentistry through the years. Dr. Dodson also served as chief of staff at Portsmouth General Hospital.

AUGUSTUS GEORGE WASHINGTON "GUS" CHRISTOPHER, JR., died on January 12, 2008. He earned bachelor's degrees from Hampden-Sydney College and Christopher Newport College. In Williamsburg, Mr. Christopher worked for many years in the real estate, banking, and accounting professions. He helped organize the Williamsburg National Bank and the Tidewater Bank and Trust Company. Also, he served on the board of the Bank of Williamsburg and the audit committee of Union Bank Shares. Mr. Christopher was active in Rotary Club and Ruritan Club, as well as the Williamsburg Baptist Church.

James Selden Harris Sr. Blackstone VA
Dr. JAMES SELDEN HARRIS, SR., died on December 30, 2007. At Hampden-Sydney, he was student body president. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954-1956 and was a 1960 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Dr. Harris was the co-founder (along with his brother Dr. A. Epes Harris, Jr. ’46) of the Blackstone Family Practice Center, a teaching facility that produced approximately 200 rural family physicians. For 40 years, Dr. Harris was a family physician in his native Blackstone. He also served as mayor for 24 years, from 1982-2006. Prior to becoming mayor, he served 10 years on the Blackstone Town Council, from 1972-1982. 1n 1976, Dr. Harris was awarded the Algernon-Sydney Sullivan Medallion, the highest alumni award that can be bestowed upon a Hampden-Sydney graduate. In 1990, he was named Virginia Family Physician of the Year. He was a lifelong member of Blackstone Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. Dr. Harris is the son of the late Andrew Epes Harris, Sr. 1906 and the father of The Rev. James Selden Harris, Jr. ’80.

Robert M. Johnson Roanoke VA
ROBERT M. JOHNSON of Roanoke died on February 23, 2008. Mr. Johnson attended Our Lady of Nazareth High School and graduated from Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, West Virginia. In college, he was a four-year letterman and a three-year starter on the offensive line and a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, the German Club, and the Monogram Club. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney, he returned to Roanoke and operated the Roanoke Steam Laundry and Dry Cleaners family business until it closed. Mr. Johnson was retired from W.W. Grainger, Inc. Mr. Johnson served as a long-time member of the Roanoke Catholic Schools Athletic Association, including a one-year term as president. He is the father of C. Michael Johnson ’73, Robert D. Johnson ’77, and Mark A. Johnson ’84.

Dr. HUBERT E. "PUCK" KISER, JR., received the 2007 Citizenship Award from the Southern Association of Orthdontists. Dr. Kiser is a past-president of the Southern Society of Orthodontics and the 1992 recipient of the S.O.A. Distinguished Service Award. He retired from the practice of orthdontics in 2001.

Dr. CHARLES C. "CHUCK" BINFORD of Houma, Louisiana, died on May 22, 2008. Dr. Binford was a diplomate of the American Board of Pathology and certified in pathological anatomy, as well as clinical pathology. He received his MD from the University of Virginia in 1959 and received further professional training when commissioned as a junior assistant surgeon in the United States Publc Health Service. He was stationed at the United States Public Health Service Out-Patient Clinic, Washington, D.C., and at the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland. Prior to his employment with South Louisiana Medical Associates at Chabert Medical Center, he held staff pathology positions as the Veterans Administration Center, Bay Pines, Florida; Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.; Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax, Virginia; and the United States Public Health Service in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he was one of three pathologists involved with the supervising of residents in anatomical and clinical rotations. He also served as an assistant professor in the department of electronics and instrumentation in the clinical laboratory at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina.

Dr. FRANCIS "NASH" BONEY retired from the University of Georgia in 1994 but continues to publish books and articles, most dealing with the University itself. On November 10 (his 78th birthday), Dr. Boney signed copies of his books A Pictorial History of the University of Georgia and The University of Georgia Trivia Book at the campus bookstore before the big game with Auburn. Next to him UGA VI held court. Dr. Boney says, "I signed 8 or 10 books while the ultimate bulldawg patiently posed for individual photos with over a hundred adoring fans. Just before the game started I slipped over and had my photo op with the world-famous mascot of the nation's premier college football team, automatically joining an elite group of slightly over 100,000 citizens of the Bulldawg Nation."

William T. Clarke Richmond VA
Dr. WILLIAM T. CLARKE of Richmond died on December 11, 2007. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Virginia Medical School and maintained a private practice in otorhinolaryngology in Richmond for 35 years. He served as chief of staff of the otorhinologic divisions of Richmond Memorial Hospital, St. Mary's Hostpital, and Johnston-Willis Hospital. He also served as chief of staff and a trustee at the Richmond Eye and Ear Hospital. Dr. Clarke served as a clinical instructor at Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical Center of Virginia. He was a member of numerous professional groups from the local to the national level. After retirement from private practice, Dr. Clarke served as medical director of Ethyl Corporation. Dr. Clarke was a lifelong member of St. Jame's Episcopal Church, where he taugh Sunday School. He was a member of the Country Club of Virginia, the Nantucket Yacht Club, the Commonwealth Club, and The Sons of the American Revolution. He was a past president of the Parents' Committee and past member of the Board of Trustees of St. Christopher's School. He served as president of the Virginia Ballet Theater and was active with the Boy Scouts Troop 400. He had a great sense of humor and loved his his church, his patients, his children, and his grandchildren.

Robert S. Mathews Houston TX
ROBERT S. MATHEWS has recently completed ten years working part-time for REI in Houston, Texas, a job he says “I enjoy too much to ever retire from.” Last year, Mr. Mathews and his wife Donna went on a wildlife safari to Tanzania. This past September, he spent a week in Alaska photographing brown bears in Lake Clark National Park. He adds, “My first two great-grandchildren were born this year. Life is good, and I’m grateful for every day.”

ROBERT BRENAMAN of Goochland died on June 12, 2008. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following the war, he was a disc jockey for Radio Free Europe. He attended Hamdpen-Sydney College, before earning his BS in business from the University of Richmond. He retired as president of Richmond Office Supply Company after 42 years. He is the brother of Dr. Hugh Orian Wrenn ’46 and uncle of Lewis R. Wrenn ’75.

STUART A. RITCHIE of Kannapolis, North Carolina, died on July 9, 2008. He was a World War II veteran. Following military service he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Hampden-Sydney. After earning a master's of divinity from Union Theological Seminary, he was ordained as a Presbyterian minister, serving in Fayetteville, North Carolina; Troy, North Carolina; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Laurel, Maryland. He then worked with Godley Construction Company before forming his own home building company, Stuart Homes. Mr. Stuart had many pursuits during his lifetime: professional magician, radio announcer, Presbyterian minister, home builder, storyteller, and gourmet cook.

Dr. CLEMENT JAY ROBBINS III of Virginia Beach died on April 14, 2008. At Hampden-Sydney he was a member of Theta Chi. He served in the U.S. Army during the occupation of Japan after World War II. He taught chemistry at Virginia Military Institute and then graduated from the Medical College of Virginia where he was a member of Phi Chi. Dr. Robbins practiced obstetrics and gynecology for 44 years in Fredericksburg. He was an avid gardener of flowers and vegetables and loved sailing, even racing his sailboat on the Finger Lakes of New York and building a sailboat with friends in Fredericksburg.

GEORGE T. BRYSON, JR., has written the book Under the Clock: A Story of Miller & Rhoads, which chronicles the history of Miller & Rhoads department store. Mr. Bryson joined the company in 1950 after graduating from the College and remained with the company until five months before it closed in 1990. The book will go on sale in November through History Press of Charleston, South Carolina.

LYNN PURCELL CHEWNING of Richmond died on September 8, 2008. Mr. Chewning was known for his successful athletic career, which began at St. Christopher's School where he earned All City and All State honors in football. He attended Virginia Military Institute during his freshman year of college and earned All State and All Conference honors. He received an appointment to the Naval Academy where he played in the infamous 1946 Army-Navy football game. He finished his collegiate career at Hampden-Sydney where he was a Little All American halfback his senior year. After college he was drafted by the New York Bulldogs (Baltimore Colts) and later played for the Richmond Rebels. He was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. He served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

JOSEPH DAVIS ELMORE, SR., of Petersburg died on December 28, 2007. He served in the Pacific Theatre of World War II before coming to Hampden-Sydney College. In college, he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the baseball team. Mr. Elmore was a retired manufacturer's sales representative, a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, and a member of the Country Club of Petersburg.

HARRY CONWAY LONERGAN, JR., of Orange died on March 20, 2008. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II before enrolling in Hampden-Sydney. At the College he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and played outfield on the Tiger baseball team. In the 1950s he joined his father in business, managing the fuel oil distributorship H.C. Lonergan and Son, Inc., in Orange. He later became sole owner and operator. Mr. Lonergan was a lifelong member of Orange Baptist Church, as well as a charter member of Kiwanis Club of Orange and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #156 and V.F.W. Post #2217.

Dr. CLAUDIUS H. PRITCHARD, JR., participated in the inauguration of Dr. Mark Lombardi as the 10th President of Maryville University-St.Louis on April 13, 2008. Dr. Pritchard served as Maryville's 7th President, retiring in 1992. He now lives in Summerville, South Carolina.
