Dr. W. RANDOLPH CHITWOOD, JR., senior associate vice chancellor for health sciences and director of the East Carolina Heart Institute at East Carolina University, was elected president of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Dr. Chitwood started the cardiac surgery program at East Carolina University's School of Medicine in 1984 and served as chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1995-2003. He is a founder of the East Carolina Heart Institute and has been a major pioneer in developing new technology for minimally invasive heart surgery. His Robotic Surgical Center has trained more than 350 surgeons from around the world in the robotic surgical techniques, which he developed. He also performed the first complete mitral valve repair in North America. He influence on cardiothoracic surgery has spread worldwide through his many academic visits demonstrating new operations and technology.

JOHN BOAZ SARTAIN of Dallas, Texas, died on April 26, 2008. Mr. Sartain was an economic consultant who was active in civic affairs from parks to politics. He attended the University of Texas at Austin before getting his degree from Hampden-Sydney where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and valedictorian of his class. He earned a master's degree in economics from Southern Methodist University. From 1974 to 1982, he was a principal with Sartain & De-Spain, Economists. In 1982, Mr. Sartain formed his own firm. His civic contributions included serving on the boards of Dallas Area Rapid Transit and Dallas Parks and Recreation. As an active member of the Democratic Party, Mr. Sartain was founder and president of the Dallas Democratic Forum. In 1974, he made an unsuccessful run for U.S. Congress in the Democratic primary. Mr. Sartain is a former member of the Hampden-Sydney College Board of Trustees.

He was a lover of animals and will be sorely missed by his family and furry companions.

He was an avid traveler and spent three years teaching school in Angola, Algeria, and Indonesia, as well as in Fredericksburg and Manassas Park. Following that, Mr. Saunders worked at Merrifield Garden Center as a garden consultant and also at Frank's Nursery in management. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church, the founder of The Church Flower Guild, a member of the choir, and an active participant in church activities. Also, Mr. Saunders was a member of the Board of Directors of the Manassas Museum Associates and was most interested in preserving local history.

Judge Wood earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1967. He worked nearly 14 years as a trial attorney in Staunton before moving to the General District Court bench for three years. For the next 23 years he served on the Circuit Court.

His work has earned him considerable recognition, including 16 state and regional AIA design awards for buildings and planning work, as well as a national AIA 2006 Honor Award for Regional and Urban Design. He lives in Bozeman, Montana, leading study trips abroad, lecturing, practicing architecture, hiking, and sailing.
