RANDOLPH CHITWOOD, JR., senior associate vice chancellor for health sciences and director of the East Carolina Heart Institute at East Carolina University, was elected president of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Dr. Chitwood started the cardiac surgery program at East Carolina University's School of Medicine in 1984 and served as chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1995-2003. He is a founder of the East Carolina Heart Institute and has been a major pioneer in developing new technology for minimally invasive heart surgery. His Robotic Surgical Center has trained more than 350 surgeons from around the world in the robotic surgical techniques, which he developed. He also performed the first complete mitral valve repair in North America. He earned a master's degree in economics from Southern Methodist University. From 1974 to 1982, he was a principal with Sartain & De-Spain, Economists. In 1982, Mr. Sartain formed his own firm. His civic contributions included serving on the boards of Dallas Area Rapid Transit and Dallas Parks and Recreation. As an active member of the Democratic Party, Mr. Sartain was founder and president of the Dallas Democratic Forum. In 1974, he made an unsuccessful run for U.S. Congress in the Democratic primary.
