1953 James Selden Harris Sr. Blackstone VA Dr. JAMES SELDEN HARRIS, SR., died on December 30, 2007. At Hampden-Sydney, he was student body president. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954-1956 and was a 1960 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Dr. Harris was the co-founder (along with his brother Dr. A. Epes Harris, Jr. ’46) of the Blackstone Family Practice Center, a teaching facility that produced approximately 200 rural family physicians. For 40 years, Dr. Harris was a family physician in his native Blackstone. He also served as mayor for 24 years, from 1982-2006. Prior to becoming mayor, he served 10 years on the Blackstone Town Council, from 1972-1982. 1n 1976, Dr. Harris was awarded the Algernon-Sydney Sullivan Medallion, the highest alumni award that can be bestowed upon a Hampden-Sydney graduate. In 1990, he was named Virginia Family Physician of the Year. He was a lifelong member of Blackstone Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. He was stationed at the United States Public Health Service Out-Patient Clinic, Washington, D.C., and at the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland. Prior to his employment with South Louisiana Medical Associates at Chabert Medical Center, he held staff pathology positions as the Veterans Administration Center, Bay Pines, Florida; Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.; Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax, Virginia; and the United States Public Health Service in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he was one of three pathologists involved with the supervising of residents in anatomical and clinical rotations. He was a member of the Country Club of Virginia, the Nantucket Yacht Club, the Commonwealth Club, and The Sons of the American Revolution. He was a past president of the Parents' Committee and past member of the Board of Trustees of St. Christopher's School. He served as president of the Virginia Ballet Theater and was active with the Boy Scouts Troop 400. He received an appointment to the Naval Academy where he played in the infamous 1946 Army-Navy football game. He finished his collegiate career at Hampden-Sydney where he was a Little All American halfback his senior year. After college he was drafted by the New York Bulldogs (Baltimore Colts) and later played for the Richmond Rebels. He was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1952 and began his medical practice in Lexington, where he also served as post surgeon at Virginia Military Institute. In 1963, he took a job on the Eastern Shore in Onancock where he stayed for the final 39 years of his career. As a general practictioner, Dr Bosworth made house calls every afternoon. He would check on his elderly patients, even when he wasn't scheduled to see them. While working in Onancock, Dr. Bosworth also served as the medical examiner for Accomack County, as well as a doctor for the jail and a nursing home. He is the father of Dr. James E. He owned and operated Fulton Motor Company, a Chrysler dealership, for more than 50 years; he also owned Fulton White Truck Company in Roanoke for many decades. An accomplished golfer, Mr. Fulton won the 1954 Virginia State Amateur Championship and later that year broke Sam Snead's course record at the Cascades Golf Course in Hot Springs. He also played in the British Amateur championship and won the Roanoke City-County Golf Championship eight times. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College, Mr. Hanes worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the day and attended the University of Maryland law school at night. In 1951, he joined his father's law office, Hanes and Hanes. He served on the Roanoke City Council for three years, after which he joined the U.S. Attorney's Office. He served as a U.S. district court clerk for almost a decade. 1969, Mr. Hanes was named U.S. attorney for the Western District of Virginia, a position he held until his retirement in 1975. During his "retirement" he acted as commonwealth's attorney for Botetourt County from 1976 to 1979, served as a special counsel in the 1980s and became interim clerk for Botetourt Circuit Court in 1991. He is remembered for being well-spoken and measured in the courtroom, as a regular reader and storyteller, and for having a mechanic's instinct for taking things apart. His grandfather, William Thompson, graduated from Union Seminary when it was located at Hampden-Sydney. His father Leigh B. Hanes graduated in 1918. 1940 Carl William Nolde Richmond VA CARL WILLIAM NOLDE of Richmond died on April 12, 2008. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps. He spent his entire business career at Nolde Brother's Bakery, which was founded by his father John Henry Nolde in 1892. Mr. Nolde retired from the company in 1975 as executive vice-president. He is remembered for his constant smile and affinity for telling jokes. Though he was in charge of the sales department at Nolde Brothers, he regularly walked the assembly line to make sure production was going as it should. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College summa cum laude, he won a research fellowship at the University of Virginia, where he earned his Ph.D in physics in 1942. His graduate work on uranium isotope seperation by ultracentrifuge was deemed crucial to the war effort and his Ph.D. thesis was classified secret until 1969. Dr. Fox accepted a post-doctoral position with Westinghouse Electric Corporation Research and Development Labs in support of the Manhattan Project. He stayed with Westinghouse's physics department and held many prominent positions. He was a member of Chi Phi fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, and a fellow of the American Physcial Society. Throughout his life, Dr. Fox was active in community, church, and charitable work. He was a lifelong member of Rotary International and a trustee of Bucknell University. He became a prominent sponsor and trustee of the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula and was a recognized contributor to the H.E.L.P. ministry to the poor and homeless. Having graduated from Union Theological Seminary in 1940, Dr. Compher was pastor emeritus of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, where he served from 1965 until his retirement in 1981. He also served for a number of years as the president of the Tampa Ministerial Association. Before moving to Tampa, he served as a pastor in Covington, Virginia; Kingsport, Tennessee; Richmond, Virginia; and Elizabethton, Tennessee. While in Tennessee, he established six new churces and was awarded a doctor of divinity degree from King College in Bristol. He was author of two books. After graduating, he worked briefly for a newspaper in South Boston before joining The Roanoke Times in 1936. Except for service in the U.S. Army in 1943-46, he worked continuously for the Roanoke newspapers and their affiliated radio and televsion stations until his retirement in 1977. He then taught journalism at Virginia Tech, where his broad knowledge, high standards, and gentle sense of humor made him a favorite of many students. During is career, he created Roanoke's first professional news staff as news director for WDBJ radio. Mr. Eure helped obtain the FCC license for WDBJ-TV and established its news department. Later he became assistant to the president and then vice president of Times-World Corp. For 15 years, he was managing editor of The Roanoke World-News. Mr. Eure was a strong believer in community service and served in numerous organizations, inlcuding a term on the Roanoke City School Board. He was also active at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church. She earned her bachelor's degree from Smith College, her master's degree from Boston University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Her doctoral dissertation became a book, Shakespeare's Defense of Poetry: "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "The Tempest". Her notable scholarly articles include works on J.R.R. Tolkien and Chinua Achebe. For 23 years, Dr. Rhoads taught English and rhetoric at Hampden-Sydney College. She enjoyed teaching a wide variety of courses, but particularly relished teaching Shakespeare and Milton. Dr. Rhoads believed that she was able to juggle motherhood, scholarship, and teaching because the institutions with which she was associated allowed her flexibility in setting her schedule. After her first treatment for breast cancer in 1994, Dr. Rhoads used aerobics to rebuild her strength. She later collaborated with a friend to produce an exercise video. 0 Irma C. Sprinkle Marion VA IRMA C. SPRINKLE, a longtime friend of Hampden-Sydney College, died on June 9, 2008. A graduate of John B. Stetson University, she worked for Pan American Airlines, Marion College, and Emory & Henry College. Mrs. Sprinkle was one of the first women Elders at Royal Oak Prebyterian Church, a member of the Marion Book and Study Club, and a charter member of the Smyth County Community Hosptial Board of Directors, serving from 1967 to 1997. In 2001, Mrs. Sprinkle established the Willis McCollum Sprinkle scholarship at Hampden-Sydney for students in pre-medical studies with a $1.3 million donation, at the time it was the largest single gift ever made to the college. 2008-08-14 10:24:00, 4403
