Gentlemen:

There we were sitting under the oaks on the Venable lawn, Prime Minister Rasmussen was speaking, and all amongst us champagne corks were rocketing into the sky as Secret Service agents stood by nervously.  Each of us had some idea of what the next few days would hold, but I doubt many of us had any idea what we would be doing now – five years later.  Five years seemed so far away when we were walking across the stage trying not to be crushed from the force of Rev. Willy’s bear hug, but here we are.  I know everyone has those and many more incredible memories from our days at H-SC, and there will be plenty of time to relive all our favorite moments; however, let’s also create some new memories together.  I’ve enjoyed reading about your advanced degrees, new jobs, weddings, and even a few new children in The Record, but it’s time share our successes from the past five years face to face.  I hope you will join me and many of our classmates October 10-11 for our fifth reunion.  Here is the schedule:

The Second Annual Homecoming Golf Tournament (open for all alumni, parents, friends and especially reunion class attendees) will begin at 9:30 Friday morning, October 10, at The Manor Golf Club in Farmville.  For alumni, parents, and friends who prefer tennis to golf, the Annual Thompson Tennis Challenge will take place at 1 p.m. at the Varsity Courts on campus.  All details will be contained in the 2008 Homecoming Brochure.

Our official class reunion activities will begin on Saturday morning, October 11, when   President Bortz will greet alumni and friends at a coffee reception at 8:00 a.m. in the Hampden-Sydney Library.  A special faculty presentation (very popular last year) will begin at 9:00 a.m. in Settle Hall.  Each reunion class (other than the 40th and the 45th) will have a specially designated class tent alongside College Road near Cushing and our Founders Lot. Our class reunion begins at 10 a.m. and is designed to be informal – casual dress and family oriented.  The $35 class reunion registration fee (children under 12 free) will include tickets to the Homecoming Luncheon, class gifts (t-shirts, caps, and cups), special reserved seating at Everett Stadium for the Emory and Henry game beginning at 1 p.m., and access to our post-game party

This year, in addition to all the other reunion festivities, we will have a party open to all students, alumni, parents, and friends after the football game against Emory and Henry College.  Since we’re celebrating the fifth anniversary of our graduation, the College decided to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the movie Animal House by inviting Otis Day and the Knights (Otis, my man!) to be the featured band.  This event should be a great new addition to the weekend.

You won’t want to miss our 2008 Homecoming Weekend.

Feel free to contact the Alumni Office or me if you have any questions between now and October, but please return the registration form NOW.  I look forward to seeing you in October!

Sincerely,

P.S. Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Lucas ’59 have graciously donated a 1957 Ford Thunderbird convertible that will be raffled at half-time.  The car is older than our ‘63 class. At 61,000 actual miles, it is lower mileage than many of us. Its all original equipment is more than some of us can claim. So, buy a chance or two.
