ALUMNI COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES

Minutes of the Hampden-Sydney College
Alumni Council Meeting
September 7 & 8, 2007

Alumni Association President Judd McAdams ’77 called the meeting to order and welcomed Council members back to Hampden-Sydney.  President Walter M. Bortz III shared several “good news” topics highlighting several achievements over the past year:

334 freshmen enrolled in the Class of 2011, the second largest class in the history of the College.

The Class of 2011 was selected from 1470 applications, the second largest number ever.

We enrolled 54 Freshman Honor Scholars. (45 in 2006)

The Class of 2011 is nearly as diverse as the Class of 2010, which was the most diverse in the history of the College.  In the Class of 2011, there are 32 minority and international students, 9.6% (10.7% in the Class of 2010).

The 1st semester record enrollment of 1122 realizes a steady growth to a long-term enrollment goal.

The faculty is comprised of 100 full-time and 23 part-time men and women.  The student-faculty ratio is 10.4 to 1.

This year we have on campus a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant who will initiate a Chinese language program.

Dr. Marc A. Hight, Elliott Associate Professor of Philosophy, was named a Fulbright Scholar for 2007-2008.  Dr. Hight’s appointment is the fifth Fulbright awarded to Hampden-Sydney faculty in the past six years.

The four-year graduation rate continues to improve.  For the Class of 2007, the rate was 69.3%%*, for 2006 – 65.0%*, for 2005 – 67.5%*, and for 2004 – 64.3%*.

* May – does not include late graduates

Overall fund raising reached an all-time record of $12,864,381.

4169 (48.3%) alumni contributed to the College in 2006-07.

The College closed its books in the black for the 2006-07 fiscal year, the 29th consecutive year with a balanced budget.

The College’s new $18.5 million library opened August 13.  The $5 million Everett Stadium opened September 1.  Work is in progress on new east wing to Gammon Gymnasium.

Hampden-Sydney placed 71 student-athletes on the 2006-07 All Old Dominion Athletic Conference Academic Squad.

In the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, Hampden-Sydney again ranked in the Second Tier of nationally ranked liberal arts colleges.

In the National Survey of Student Engagement, Hampden-Sydney men engage more often than college men nationally in student-faculty interaction and active and collaborative learning.  In the same survey, Hampden-Sydney men rated the College higher than other college men rate their liberal arts institutions in regard to academic challenge and a supportive campus environment.

A roll call was taken to record club attendance:

Trustee Perspective – John C. Ellis, Jr.’70

Mr. Ellis has served as the Trustee Representative for the Alumni Council since 1995.  He spoke about the evolution of the H-SC Alumni Association from a small group consisting of just 30 Club Presidents to today’s total of almost 250 identified Club Presidents and Leadership Team members.  The importance of this expanded volunteer base is vital in accomplishing the Alumni Association’s objectives to support the College’s Admissions (Men), Development (Money), Career Development (Jobs), and Young Alumni initiatives.  Strength lies in numbers, and statistics compiled in the Waters Cup Report prove that clubs with the recommended infrastructure of leadership team members with assigned individuals in the above mentioned areas are achieving measurable success. Continuity in efforts is essential by clubs and individuals to achieve the level of success desired.

This year, one of the major initiatives of our Alumni Association is to increase participation of alumni giving to the College’s Annual Fund.  Mr. Ellis has challenged the Alumni Council to ignite significant improvement in this area – specifically towards a desired 60% participation figure.

Mr. Ellis said the Trustees are grateful for the support of the Alumni Council and the Alumni Associations reorganization efforts.
