Mike Pace ’79 will be
about 15 minutes late. In his absence, RPE opens meeting and
welcomes past presidents and others attending. RPE gives a brief
history of the Alumni Association.
M. Pace arrives and

then outlines the purpose of the meeting.

those in attendance and wishes all a productive meeting.
Chuck McPhillips asks
for all attendees to spend the day(s) making a list to give him
before leaving that:
-
Identifies their goals for the meeting
-
Identify several things your leadership team and the Alumni Office
can do to assist with goals.
RPE gives an update
of what’s happening on The Hill”. He also offers that we are ahead
of schedule at this time; coaches will be joining us at lunch and
make individual presentations; Admissions applications are at an all
time high and that retention is better than in recent memory.
Dean Earl Fleck gives
a brief status report and then mentions the following challenges his
office will face in the near future:
-
There will be a 40+% turnover in faculty within the next five
years
-
HSC will be going through the accredation process again and
Paul Baker will be in charge.
-
He mentions that Don Whitley had contacted him regarding
articles in the DC newspapers about MSSE and applicants using the
web to obtain information about colleges. He had asked if HSC has a
web site suitable for public inquires and a direct link to MSSE.
Answer: YES. He quoted from several articles
-
Other problems? Yes – HSC’s lack of diversity (all male
status, minorities, etc.)
Dean Fleck introduces Prof. Alex Werth, current
chair and director of the Honors Program, Prof. Katherine Weese,
upcoming director, and two current students who will make their
presentations before the Council. Prof. Werth explained that the
program works with the Admissions Office, Institutional Advancement
and other arms of the College to attract and recruit prospective
students who, during the application process are interviewed and
offered scholarships to attend H-SC. Their involvement in their
freshman year seems to help retention. The program is also an
incentive for currently enrolled students who were not offered
scholarships to join the program as freshmen, to join during their
college career. The Honors Program is not offered as part of the
regular curriculum, but more of an interdisciplinary course,
co-taught by two professors. In the beginning years of the program,
originated by Dr. Bob Rogers, the program was offered to
approximately fifteen students. Today there are over two hundred
students involved, including summer research programs. Honors
Scholars, seniors Wesley Sholtes '05 and Killian Zimmerman '05
presented their research projects. President Pace thanked them and
commented on their impressive projects.
