Meeting Minutes
Alumni Association President McPhillips
introduced College President Dr. Walter M. Bortz III who welcomed
alumni back to campus and commented on the overall health of
Hampden-Sydney. The College enjoyed an all-time high applicant pool
and enrolled 322 freshmen this fall. The applicant pool has grown
by 50% during the past 5 years. The Annual Fund topped $2 Million
for the fifth time, reaching an all-time high of $2.3 Million.
President Bortz stressed the importance of maintaining this momentum
as we prepare for the announcement of the public phase of the
"Through These Gates" Capital Campaign next fall. The College has
raised approximately $51 Million of the $91 Million stated campaign
goal.
President Bortz also reminded the Council of
the World War II Veterans Reunion which begins this weekend and runs
through September 14.
Mr. McPhillips then stated he was is excited to
begin his two-year term as President of the Alumni Association. He
wants to expand on the "Men and Money" theme of the past few years.
His theme is "MCMIC; Men, Careers, Money, Influence, and Comradery".
He encourages constructive input and influence from the Council in
order to accomplish our goals and objectives.
Over the course of this meeting, we will
attempt to establish agreement on reasonable and legitimate
expectations for our Association this year. There is much work to
be done to make MCMIC successful. One of the main points of
emphasis must be attendance at the Alumni Council meetings. Today,
only 50% of our clubs are represented. That is unacceptable and
efforts will be taken to improve attendance for the spring meeting –
April 21-22, 2006. Vice President Judd McAdams will be asked to
furnish leadership in this effort, especially with respect to the
clubs from geographically remote, but important, metropolitan areas
in the south. As for absent clubs located relatively close to the
College, an examination will need to be made of their current
leadership structure.
Mr. McPhillips then called upon National Vice
President for Career Development, Tom Crowder '78, and Rucker Snead
'81, Director of Career Development at the College. The Alumni
Council has been most pleased by the progress being made by the
Career Development Office under Mr. Snead's energetic leadership (
see
www.hsc.edu Career Development). The Council was very pleased
to learn about Mr. Snead's action plan for the upcoming year, which
invites alumni participation.
A motion was duly made and seconded to add a
Career Development goal component to the Waters Cup criteria this
year. All clubs will now be asked to meet the stated Internship
objectives, along with those from Admissions and Development.
Discussion also occurred concerning the need
for an alumni point of contact for Career matters at each Club. A
motion was duly made and seconded, requiring that every club,
insofar as feasible, to identify a club contact person for Career
Development by September 30, 2005. This point of contact,
who normally will be a leadership team member other than the
President, would be responsible for coordinating the local club's
career efforts with Mr. Crowder of the Alumni Council and Mr. Snead
of the Career Development Office. After discussion, the motion was
passed by unanimous vote of Council members.
The revised Waters Cup Criteria were
distributed. See below:
