Summer College 2008
June 6-8, 2008
In the upcoming presidential election global climate change unites all three candidates as an issue of signal importance in charting the future of America’s world leadership. Although the candidates may differ on other issues, e.g., the economy, the war, each recognizes the importance of moving the United States toward patterns of sustainable development that reduce the impact on climate of human activity. And yet, surveys show that many people view the issue of global climate change as a scientific uncertainty. As one citizen put it on a 24-hour news channel in an interview, “For every scientist that claims that global warming exists, there is a scientist that claims the opposite.” The prevalence of such views keep “the environment” a comparatively low-key issue when judged against its political prominence in other countries.
This year Hampden-Sydney College is offering a Summer Alumni College devoted to the exploration of the status of the issue of global climate change and sustainable development. Exactly what is human-caused, or anthropogenic global warming? What are its purported consequences? Is there, or is there not a scientific debate on the subject of global climate change? What are the responses being crafted from businesses? From the political arena? Does climate change necessitate mitigation, i.e., restoration of the environment to a former state, or is it possible to adapt to changing conditions? How has public opinion on global warming been influenced and affected by the media? These questions and others will be addressed by a panel of internationally known speakers who will deliver talks from June 6-8. See the full schedule for the details.
