TIGER BASEBALL TAKES TWO FROM EASTERN AND LINCOLN (February 19, 2005) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney College’s baseball team defeated Eastern University (4-3) and Lincoln University (13-1) on the first day of the 2005 H-SC Spring Baseball Tournament. The two victories boost the Tigers record to a perfect 3-0 start. During the Tigers first game, Eastern University’s Ryan Patroni (Port Charlotte, FL/Holy Spirit) started the game with a lead-off double and was driven home moments later by teammate Chris Raniere (Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) for an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Hampden-Sydney’s bats came alive in the fourth inning with a double from senior Mike Clark (Kinsale, VA/Washington & Lee) and back to back singles from Tommy Burk (Leesburg, VA/Loudon County) and Joe Knowles (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) leading to a 1-1 game headed into the fifth inning. Ryan Patroni answered the Tiger attack in the fifth with a two-run homer for his second hit of the game. The Eagles regained the lead, 3-1. Heading into the final inning with the score remaining 3-1, Eastern University brought in freshman closer Trevor Gustafson (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown). Gustafson walked in one run and left the bases loaded for Jason Bour (Centerville, Va/Westfield) who drove in two runs with a game winning single for a 4-3 comeback victory. Taking on Lincoln University in the Tiger’s second game, Hampden-Sydney took a commanding 8-0 lead in the second inning after a two-run bomb by sophomore Josh Davidson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage). Hampden-Sydney continued their offensive attack with two runs in the third inning, two more in the fourth, and one final run in the sixth to give the Tigers a 13-0 lead heading into the final inning. Lincoln University’s Vincent Curtis (Philadelphia, PA/Overbrook) started off the seventh inning with a double and then advanced to third on a balk. Teammate Joshua Graber (Baltimore, MD/Lady of Mt. Carmel) hit a sacrifice fly deep enough to drive Curtis home for the Lion’s one and only run of the game. Freshman pitcher Doug Hudgins (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman) struck out the final batter giving the Tigers a 13-1 victory. In other tournament action, Richard Stockton started their season off with two victories over Waynesburg (6-4) and Eastern (11-1). Washington and Lee sophomore pitcher Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) threw a perfect game en route to a 21-0 win over Lincoln University. Edwards struck out 11 of the 18 batters throughout seven innings. Washington and Lee also defeated Waynesburg College 7-4 in their second round game.
