BASEBALL TIGERS WIN FOURTH IN A ROW VS. WAYNESBURG, 10-2 (February 20, 2005) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The Hampden-Sydney College baseball team won their fourth straight game vs. Waynesburg College (10-2) in the final game of the 2005 H-SC Spring Baseball Tournament. The Tigers undefeated season stays alive as they improve to 4-0. The Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) and Mike Clark (Kinsale, VA/Washington & Lee) crossed home plate in the first inning. The offensive attack continued in the third with two doubles by sophomore outfielder John Apperson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Senior Mike Clark. Tommy Burk (Leesburg, VA/Loudon County) followed with a single to drive in the fourth run of the inning and give the Tigers a 6-0 lead. Andrew Wall (Elizabethtown, NC/East Bladen) started off the fourth with a single followed by David Cameron (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) who was walked and Jay Lilley was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Mike Clark chalked up his second hit of the day with a single to drive in two more runs and build an 8-0 lead for the Tigers. Waynesburg brought in their fourth pitcher of the game in the sixth inning, Jimmy Johnson (Washington, PA/Trinity), to try and put a stop to the Hampden-Sydney bats. Johnson walked three batters before getting to freshman Brett Delk (Columbus, MS/Caledonia). With the bases juiced, Delk poked a single and picked up two RBI’s for a commanding 10-0 lead heading into the final inning. Waynesburg finally got on the board in the seventh inning as junior Ryan Cummings (Toronto, Ohio/Steubenville Central Catholic) hit a double and drove home two runs for the Yellow Jackets. Waynesburg’s final efforts would fall short as Hampden-Sydney’s freshman pitcher Jaren Cobbs (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) closed out the game with the first strikeout of his collegiate career and a final score of 10-2. In other tournament action, Richard Stockton defeated Lincoln University 10-6. Lincoln jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Richard Stockton scored eight runs in the third inning. The Lions put two more runs on the board making it 8-4 but Richard Stockton answered with two runs of its own for a comfortable 10-4 lead. Lincoln made one final push in the fifth inning with two more runs but that would be as close as they would come. Richard Stockton finished out the game for a final score of 10-6. Fellow ODAC opponent Washington and Lee University beat Eastern College 5-2. With the game tied 1-1 heading into the fifth inning, Washington and Lee poured in three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Eastern scored once more in the sixth but Washington and Lee answered with a run of their own for a final score of 5-2. Hampden-Sydney will travel to Averett on Wednesday, February 23rd for a three o’clock game before returning home next Saturday to host Seton Hill.
