Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (February 27, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney’s baseball team continued its hot start to the 2005 season Sunday as the Tigers swept an afternoon doubleheader from SUNY Old Westbury, winning the first game, 5-2, and the second, 13-3, en route to improving their overall record to 7-2.

Tiger junior pitcher John Schoenholtz (Dharhan, Saudi Arabia/McCallie School) earned his first victory of the year on the hill for the Tigers as he allowed two runs, scattered six hits, struck out four and walked one over six innings of work.  Junior reliever Jeff Martin (Richmond, VA/Meadowbrook) worked the seventh inning and allowed just two hits and no runs to pick up his first collegiate save as the Tigers downed the Panthers, 5-2.

Hampden-Sydney held a 3-0 lead through the first three innings of play as Mike Clark (Kinsale, VA/Washington and Lee) had an RBI single in the first and then scored on a balk by Old Westbury pitcher Argelis Rosario, while junior centerfielder Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) doubled home a run in the second inning.

Old Westbury came back with a pair of runs off Schoenholtz in the fourth inning thanks to a two-run single by third baseman Matt Hennan.  The Tigers then added insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth, when Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) scored on a wild pitch, and in the bottom of the sixth, on a John Apperson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) RBI single.

In the second game, Hampden-Sydney rallied from an early 3-0 deficit and scored in every inning in which the team batted en route to the 13-3 victory.  John Apperson and Chris Padgett each drove in three runs, while Mike Clark had three hits and two RBI as the two through four spots in the Tiger lineup combined for an 8-for-12 performance at the plate.

Meanwhile, Tiger starter Larry Greene (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) earned his first collegiate victory as he pitched the first five innings and allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out six to improve to 1-0 on the season.  Freshman Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) pitched the sixth inning and allowed just one hit, while junior Robert Aldrich (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) overpowered Old Westbury in the seventh as he struck out the side.

Jamie Quinn led Old Westbury at the plate in the second game as he went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while starting pitcher Nelson Hernandez took the loss after allowing seven runs (two earned) on eight hits over the first inning and two-thirds.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Wednesday, March 2, as the team hosts St. Mary’s (MD) at 3 pm at Yank Bernier Field.
