BASEBALL TIGERS SCORE 10-3 WIN OVER NEWBERRY

NEWBERRY, SC (March 7, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney’s baseball team picked up a 10-3 victory over NCAA Division-II affiliate Newberry College Monday afternoon.  The win moves the Tigers to 9-3 on the year, while Newberry falls to 6-12. 

Hampden-Sydney sophomore pitcher Larry Greene (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) earned the victory on the hill as he worked the first five innings and allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out three and walking two batters.  Freshman Brock Ward (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) worked three innings of relief and allowed just three hits, while junior Jeff Martin (Richmond, VA/Meadowbrook) worked the ninth and allowed just one run before closing out the win for the Tigers. 

Freshman designated hitter Jason Bour (Centreville, VA/Westfield) and junior centerfielder Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) led the Tigers at the plate as Bour went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Padgett also collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs.  The Tigers scored single runs in the first and second before busting the game open with a three-run fourth that was highlighted by a two-run single by junior shortstop Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch). 

Bour drove in one of two Tiger runs in the sixth inning, while Padgett capped off the scoring with a two-run single in the top of the ninth.  Newberry pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a Matthew Webb two-run double, while the Indians took advantage of two Tiger errors in the bottom of the ninth en route to scoring a single run. 

Newberry’s Joel Crisp took the loss as he worked three and one-third innings and allowed five runs on five hits while walking three and striking out three.  Josh Page worked the final five and two-thirds and gave up five runs (three earned) on nine hits for the Indians. 

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Tuesday as the Tigers take on Montreat College at 3 pm on the campus of Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, GA.
