Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 12, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney College completed a doubleheader sweep of Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Eastern Mennonite University Saturday at Yank Bernier Field, winning the first game, 4-2, and the second, 14-5.  With the victories, the Tigers improve to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference while the Royals drop to 6-6 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Tiger junior starter John Schoenholtz (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia) picked up his third win of the year in the first game as he surrendered two runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking one.  Eastern Mennonite touched Schoenholtz for two runs in the first inning, thanks to a two-run double by catcher Kenny Riley, but managed just three hits the rest of the way.

The Tigers tied the game in their half of the second on an RBI single by senior designated hitter Joe Knowles (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and a sacrifice fly by freshman leftfielder Kevin Hill (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial).  The team added two more in the bottom of the fifth as freshman catcher Jason Bour (Centreville, VA/Westfield) and junior first baseman Tommy Burk (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) each drove in runs.

Burk finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and run scored, while Joe Knowles also had a pair of hits to go with an RBI.  Cole Thornton led the Royals at the plate as he went 3-for-4.  EMU starter T.J. Frazier took the loss on the hill as he worked six innings and gave up four runs on six hits while walking three and striking out three.

In the second game, Hampden-Sydney received a quality start from junior Jayson Hanky (Richmond, VA/Benedictine), who improve to 2-1 on the year after working five and two-thirds innings and allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four and walking two.  Freshman Brock Ward (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) worked two and one-thirds innings of scoreless relief, while junior Robert Aldrich (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) allowed two runs on one hit in the ninth.

Jason Bour and junior centerfielder Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) each drove in three runs on the day as Bour smacked his second career homer, a solo shot in the third inning, while Padgett doubled home a pair of runs in the eighth.

Junior shortstop Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) and freshman third baseman David Cameron (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) each picked up two hits and drove in two runs on the day, while Tommy Burk collected his fourth and fifth hits of the afternoon with a single and double in the second game.

Cole Thornton once-again led the Royals with two hits, while he also had an RBI, and Curt Almarode went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  Jeremy Morris allowed five runs on eight hits over the first three innings, while Drew Cobb was the hard luck loser for the Royals after working three innings of relief and giving up three runs on six hits.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Sunday as the team travels to Lexington, VA, to take on Washington and Lee University in a doubleheader starting at 12 pm.
