The Tigers record moved to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play while the Generals moved to 17-3 overall and 5-1 in the ODAC. Hampden-Sydney cruised to victory in the first game as sophomore pitcher Larry Greene (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) worked six innings and allowed four runs on five hits en route to winning his third game of the year. Meanwhile, junior shortstop Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) led the Tiger offensive attack as he recorded two of the teams’ 16 hits and blasted a three-run homer in the third inning off Washington and Lee starter Tim Livingston. Freshman catcher Jason Bour (Centreville, VA/Westfield) continued his hot hitting as he rapped out three more hits and drove in three runs, while senior second baseman Mike Clark (Kinsale, VA/Washington and Lee) also went 3-for-5 while he drove in a pair of runs as the Tigers scored ten or more runs for the eighth time this season. Adam Bullock led the Generals in game one as he was the only member of the team to record two hits as he finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Livingston took the loss, his first of the year, after working four innings and giving up nine runs on seven hits. Washington and Lee turned the tables in the second game behind the strong pitching performance of freshman starter John Parker who held the Tigers scoreless for eight innings and allowed just seven hits. Meanwhile, the Generals chased Tiger starter Michael Hall (Leonardtown, MD/St. Mary’s-Ryken) after two and two-thirds innings in which W&L scored six runs (five earned) on six hits. Washington and Lee designated hitter Jordan Wesley led the Generals bats with two homers and three runs driven in, while right fielder Richard Garland finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI. Shortstop Scott Gosselink gave Washington and Lee three homers on the game with a two-run shot in the seventh inning en route to a 3-for-3 performance at the plate to go with four runs scored. The Tigers trailed 13-0 through eight innings, but rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth off W&L reliever Steve Marcott. Tiger senior first baseman Joe Knowles (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) paced the H-SC assault as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Jason Bour and sophomore outfielder John Apperson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) each recorded two hits. Meanwhile, freshmen David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) and Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) each drove in runs during the ninth inning rally. Hampden-Sydney returns to the field Thursday, March 17, as the team travels to Fayetteville, NC, to take on 21st-ranked Methodist College at 3 pm. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
