TIGERS AND MAROONS SPLIT ODAC DOUBLEHEADER

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

SALEM, VA (March 19, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney College split a two-game series with Old Dominion Athletic Conference-foe Roanoke College Saturday as the Tigers won the first game, 10-1, before falling in the second contest, 4-3.  The Tigers own a 13-7 overall record and 5-3 mark in the ODAC after the series, while the Maroons are 5-10 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Tiger starter John Schoenholtz (Dhahran, Saudia Arabia/McCallie School) worked his third consecutive complete game en route to picking up his fourth victory of the year in H-SC’s 10-1 win.  Schoenholtz allowed just one run on six hits while walking none and striking out six over the course of the seven inning contest.

Meanwhile, the Tigers scored six runs in the first two innings and never looked back as Mike Clark (Kinsale, VA/Washington and Lee) recorded two of his three RBI in the first two innings, while Luke Brankley (Onancock, VA/Nandua) and Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) each drove in runs in the second.  The Tigers added three more in the fourth inning as Clark and freshman Jason Bour (Centreville, VA/Westfield) each drove in runs on ground outs, while Padgett scored on a wild pitch.

The Maroons scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Mike Eubank doubled home Lauck Blake.  Roanoke starter Kirk Dent took the loss after surrendering six runs (three earned) on two hits in one and two-thirds innings while walking four and striking out one.

Roanoke rallied in the bottom of the ninth to steal a 4-3 victory away from the Tigers in the second contest.  Matt Vess and Kirby Hamilton each hit solo homers, Hamilton’s a walk-off blast, en route to erasing a 3-2 Tiger lead.

The homeruns spoiled a solid outing by Tiger starter Larry Greene (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) who worked eight and two-thirds innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out six and walking one.  Meanwhile, Roanoke starter Jonathan Wills ended up with the complete game victory after allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking two.

The Tigers scored two runs in the first inning as Mike Clark ripped a two-run single to score John Apperson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Chris Padgett.  The team then added another run in the third as Chris Padgett doubled home Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch).  The Maroons cut the Tiger lead to one run in the bottom of the fifth as Josh Ringstaff scored on a error before Mike Eubank singled to score Kirby Hamilton.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Wednesday, March 23, as the team takes on Virginia Intermont College at 5 pm in a doubleheader scheduled to be played at Randolph-Henry High School in Charlotte Court House, VA.
