BASEBALL TIGERS DOWN BAPTIST BIBLE COLLEGE, 12-1 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 24, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney College picked up its 14th win of the season with a 12-1 victory over Baptist Bible College Thursday afternoon at Yank Bernier Field. With the win, the Tigers move to 14-7 overall on the season while the Defenders fall to 3-2. Tiger senior pitcher Ben Agee (Farmville, VA/Prince Edward) earned the victory after allowing just one hit and striking out six over the first four innings of action. Freshman Jared Cobbs (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) worked two innings of relief and allowed one run on three hits, while junior Robert Aldrich (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) worked the seventh inning and did not allow a hit while striking out one and walking two to close out the contest, which was called in the seventh inning due to the ten run rule. Sophomore outfielders Brett Delk (Columbus, MS/Caledonia) and Josh Davidson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) each went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs for the Tigers, while senior first baseman Joe Knowles (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) also collected two hits and two RBI. Meanwhile, freshman third baseman David Cameron (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) and junior centerfielder Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) both went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI to help bolster the 12-run, 14-hit Tiger attack. Hampden-Sydney bolted out to a 7-0 lead in its half of the first inning and never looked back as the team recorded seven hits, while Padgett, Knowles, Delk and Davidson each drove in runs along with freshman designated hitter Jason Bour (Centreville, VA/Westfield) and junior shortstop Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch). The Tigers tacked on two more runs in the second, thanks to RBI hits by Knowles and Cameron, and added three more in the fifth as Delk tripled to score Anthony Denale (Lusby, MD/Patuxent), while Davidson singled home Delk and Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nanesemond-Suffolk) doubled home Davidson. Baptist Bible collected its lone run in the top of the fifth as centerfielder Andy Cross grounded out to score pinch runner Mick Little. Baptist Bible pitcher Kyle Hardenbrook took the loss after working six innings and allowing 12 runs on 14 hits while walking two and striking out three. Hampden-Sydney returns to action Saturday as the team hosts an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader with arch-rival Randolph-Macon College at 12 pm at Yank Bernier Field. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
