BASEBALL TIGERS BLANK AVERETT, 4-0

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 29, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney’s baseball team scored its first shutout victory of the season with a 4-0 triumph over Averett University Tuesday at Yank Bernier Field.  With the win, the Tigers improve to 17-7 overall, while the Cougars drop to 6-24. 

Tiger freshman Brock Ward (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) earned his first collegiate victory as he posted six shutout innings while allowing just three hits and striking out seven.  Freshman Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) worked the final three innings and allowed just one hit while striking out five to close out the contest. 

Hampden-Sydney scored its first run in the third on a base hit by Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) that scored Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch)Luke Brankley (Onancock, VA/Nandua) tripled to bring home Tommy Burk (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun Valley) in the second before Lilley, who was 3-for-5 with two RBI on the afternoon, tripled to score Brankley and give the Tigers a 3-0 advantage. 

Hampden-Sydney added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Lilley singled home Andrew Wall (Elizabethtown, NC/East Bladen) to give the Tigers the eventual four-run advantage.  Lilley, Padgett, Burk and Wall each collected three hits on the day for the Tigers who managed 16 as a team. 

Jason Inge, T.J. Bray, Pierce Steinruck and Joseph Garry each had one hit to lead the Cougars offensive attack.  Keith Lawrence took the loss on the mound for Averett after giving up three runs and 12 hits over the first six innings.  Meanwhile, Conrad Smith entered the game in the seventh and allowed one run on four hits. 

Hampden-Sydney, which will equal its win total from 2004 with its next victory on the year, returns to action Wednesday as the Tigers host Greensboro College at 3 pm at Yank Bernier Field.
