BASEBALL TIGERS FALL TO              GREENSBORO IN NINTH, 7-6

Game Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 30, 2005)—Greensboro College scored the winning run in its half of the ninth inning to take a 7-6 victory over Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday at H-SC’s Yank Bernier Field.  With the loss, the Tigers drop to 17-8 on the year while the Pride improves to 18-10.

Greensboro got on the scoreboard first as Kevin Mong singled home Larry Lockhart in the fourth inning.  The Tigers tied it in the bottom of the inning when freshman third baseman Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) singled up the middle to drive in Tommy Burk (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun Valley)

The Pride took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth on a Jeremy Morrison RBI single, then broke the game open with four unearned runs in the seventh inning.  Morrison and Brent Justice each had RBI hits in the seventh as Greensboro took advantage of two Tiger errors to force all four runs across with two outs.

The Tigers rallied in the bottom of the seventh as leftfielder Luke Brankley (Onancock, Nandua) singled home Harrell.  However, the Tigers grounded into a double play to end the inning, leaving two runners in scoring position.

Trailing 6-2, the Tigers came back to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth as Luke Brankley drove in Kevin Hill (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) and Tommy Burk, while Mike Clark (Kinsale, VA/Washington and Lee) walked with the bases loaded to bring home Jason Bour (Centreville, VA/Westfield), while Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) singled to score Clark and tie the game.

Chad Clark led off the top of the ninth with a walk for the Pride.  Clark was then replaced on the base paths by Anthony Corona, who stole second, and then scored what proved to be the game-winner on Jeremy Morrison’s single up the middle.  Hampden-Sydney could not muster a final rally in the ninth as Greensboro handed the Tigers just their third home loss of the season, 7-6.

Greensboro’s Josh Maras earned the win after pitching the ninth inning and allowing no runs and one hit.  Meanwhile, Tiger reliever Jeff Martin (Richmond, VA/Meadowbrook) took the loss after giving up one run on two hits over the final two innings of play.

Luke Brankley finished the game with three hits and three RBI, while Jason Bour and Todd Harrell each collected two hits for the Tigers.  Jeremy Morrison had three hits and three RBI for the Pride, while Taylor Kennedy had a pair of base hits.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Saturday as the Tigers travel to Greensboro, NC, to take on Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Guilford College in a doubleheader beginning at 12 pm.
