BRIDGEWATER SWEEPS BASEBALL TIGERS

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, VA (April 9, 2005)—Bridgewater College won both games of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader with Hampden-Sydney College Saturday, taking the first contest, 1-0, and the second, 19-10.  With the wins, Bridgewater improves to 17-11-1 overall and 10-3 in the ODAC, while the Tigers fall to 17-11 overall and 7-6 in conference play.

Tiger junior pitcher Jayson Hanky (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) took the hard luck loss in the first game despite pitching six full innings and allowing just one run on seven hits while walking none and striking out five.  He was out dueled by Bridgewater’s Jimmy Greene, who limited the Tigers to five hits and struck out four over the game’s seven innings.

Bridgewater picked up the game’s only run in the second inning when catcher Bryan Saunders blasted a solo homer to lead off the inning.  The Tigers managed five hits, led by senior second baseman Mike Clark (Kinsale, VA/Washington and Lee) with two, but could not push across a run.

The second game turned into a slugfest as the two squads combined for 31 hits and 29 runs, while Bridgewater committed eight errors.  Hampden-Sydney pushed across one run in the second inning, five in the sixth and four in the ninth but it was not enough to thwart a pair of seven run innings by the Eagles, who also scored a combined five runs in the first, third and fifth innings to go with seven runs in the fourth and eighth.

Bridgewater led, 12-6, heading into its half of the eighth inning before breaking loose for its second seven run inning of the contest to take a commanding, 19-6, lead.  The Tigers rallied with four runs in their half of the ninth but could not overcome the Bridgewater advantage and fell for the fourth straight game.

Sophomore right fielder John Apperson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Mike Clark both led the Tiger offensive attack with two hits and two RBI, while Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch), Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown), Joe Knowles (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage), David Cameron (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) and Andrew Wall (Elizabethtown, NC/East Bladen) each knocked in runs.

Bridgewater second baseman Tracy Wagner, along with first baseman Ricky Read combined to drive in seven runs for the Eagles, while third baseman Jono Brooks drove in three runs.

Tiger freshman pitcher Brock Ward (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) took the loss on the mound after allowing eight runs on eight hits over the first three and one-third innings.  Bridgewater’s Nolan Shaffer earned the win despite giving up six runs on 11 hits in six innings of work.

The Tiger baseball team will look to return to its winning ways Sunday as the team travels to Greensboro, NC, to take on Guilford College in a doubleheader starting at 1 pm.
