BASEBALL TIGERS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH GUILFORD GREENSBORO, NC (April 10, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney’s baseball team earned a split with Guilford College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday as the Tigers won the first game, 9-4, before falling in the second contest, 11-6. Hampden-Sydney moves to 18-12 overall and 8-7 in ODAC play, while Guilford is now 21-12 overall and 10-5 in conference action. Hampden-Sydney starter John Schoenholtz (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/McCallie) improved to 6-1 on the year in the first game after working all seven innings and allowing eight hits and four runs while walking one batter and striking out seven. The Tigers used a six-run second inning to get out of a 2-1 deficit after the first inning en route to the 9-4 victory which snapped a four game losing skid. Tiger senior second baseman Mike Clark (Kinsale, VA/Washington and Lee) led the team with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate to go with three RBI, while freshman third baseman Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) drove in a pair of runs. In the second game, Hampden-Sydney built a 4-0 lead in its half of the third inning as John Apperson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Mike Clark each drove in one run before Joe Knowles (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) smacked a two-run single. In Guilford’s half of the inning the Quakers sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs including two on Chad Boone’s homer, however five of the runs were unearned thanks to three Tiger errors. Hampden-Sydney battled back, cutting the lead to two runs, 8-6, by the sixth inning, but Guilford closed the door on the Tiger comeback with three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning en route to the 11-6 victory. Guilford starting pitcher Matt Spoerlein earned the victory after working six innings and allowing six runs on 12 hits, while Tiger starter Larry Greene took the loss, just his second of the season, after allowing seven runs (two earned) on six hits over two and two-thirds innings. Mike Clark, Luke Brankley (Onancock, VA/Nandua) and Chris Padgett each had three hits, while Clark and Knowles both drove in two runs. Meanwhile, Boone and Ian Spector each drove in three runs for the Quakers. Hampden-Sydney returns to action Tuesday as the team travels to Lynchburg, VA, to take on Lynchburg College at 3 pm. A win over the Hornets would give Hampden-Sydney 19 wins in a season for the first time since winning 24 during the 1991 campaign. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
