Game Two Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 16, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney’s baseball swept an afternoon doubleheader Saturday from Emory and Henry College, winning the first game, 9-0, and the second, 8-4, en route to securing the program’s first winning season since 1993 and first 20 win campaign since 1991.  With the wins, the Tigers finish the 2005 regular season with a 20-13 overall record and 10-8 mark in the ODAC, while the Wasps fall to 2-27 overall and 0-16 in conference.

The Tigers’ celebrated a senior day sweep in fine fashion, winning the first game behind the pitching of John Schoenholtz (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/McCallie), who allowed just two hits and struck out a season-high ten batters as he improved to 7-1 on the year.  Senior Mike Clark (Kinsale, VA/Washington and Lee) and sophomore John Apperson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) each drove in two runs on the day as the Tigers recorded 11 hits by 11 different batters.

In the second game, the Tigers built a 3-0 lead thanks to an RBI groundout by freshman David Cameron (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) in the second inning and RBI hits by Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) and Clark in the second inning.

The Wasps rallied with two runs in the top of the fifth when designated hitter Casey Burcham singled with the bases loaded to drive in Gavin Haynes and Will Freeland.  The Tigers came back with four runs in their half of the inning when Clark drove in his fourth run of the day after being hit by a pitch with the bases juiced, before Joe Knowles (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly and Tommy Burk (Leesville, VA/Loudoun Valley) drove in two runs with a single.

The Wasps cut the Tiger advantage to three runs, 7-4, in the seventh as Preston Frye and Eli Tozar each drove in runs, but the Tigers added an insurance run in their half of the seventh on Tommy Burk’s grounder that drove in his third run of the game.

Tiger starter Larry Greene (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) earned the win and improved to 5-2 on the year as he gave up two runs on six hits over the first four and two-thirds innings of work.  Emory and Henry starter Adam Hall took the loss after giving up eight runs (five earned) on six hits over seven innings of work.

The Tigers hope to return to action next Thursday, April 21, in the 2005 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament in Salem, VA.  Seedings and pairings for the tournament will be announced later in the weekend.
