SCHOENHOLTZ SHUTS OUT GULLS AS TIGERS ADVANCE IN REGIONAL (May 19, 2004) SALISBURY, MD—Hampden-Sydney College junior pitcher John Schoenholtz (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/McCallie School) scattered six hits and struck out seven batters en route to leading the Tigers (25-13) to a 4-0 victory over top-seeded and 12th-ranked Salisbury University (28-8-2) Thursday in the opening round of play in the 2005 NCAA Division III Baseball South Regional at Arthur Perdue Stadium. The win is Schoenholtz’s tenth of the year, which sets a new single-season win record for H-SC pitchers, while the Tigers’ 25 wins is a new single-season victories record for the program. Schoenholtz worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning after Salisbury’s Greg Lemon and Andrew Jensen each singled before Nick Pegelow was hit by a pitch. Schoenholtz picked off Jensen at second before striking out Salisbury clean up hitter Mike Williams and coaxing a ground out by designated hitter Matt Johnson. The Tigers added their first run of the game in the top of the second as freshman third baseman Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Mike Clark (Kinsale, VA/Washington and Lee) from third. Schoenholtz then allowed just one base hit over the next four innings and struck out four in-a-row at one point to keep the Tigers’ one-run lead alive. Hampden-Sydney gave Schoenholtz some breathing room in the top of the sixth when Luke Brankley (Onancock, VA/Nandua) hit a two-run double, while Jason Bour (Centreville, VA/Westfield) scored on a Sea Gull error to make the score, 4-0. Schoenholtz did the rest as he recorded his ninth complete game in 11 starts on the year and improved to 10-1 overall. The fourth-seeded Tigers advance to play third-seeded
Ferrum College, which defeated second-seeded Mary Washington 4-0 in Thursday’s
early game, at 11 am Friday morning. A win Friday puts the Tigers into
Saturday’s 12 pm championship contest. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
