SCHWARTZ, ROWAN SPOIL TIGERS’ RUN WITH 10-0 VICTORY GRAND CHUTE, WI—Rowan University (42-8) pitcher Josh Schwartz struck out 13 and allowed just four hits in leading the Profs to a 10-0 victory over Hampden-Sydney College (27-14) in the first round of action at the 2005 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Series at Fox Cities Stadium Friday night. With the win, Schwartz improves to 13-0 on the year and moves his NCAA all divisions record win streak to 37 straight games. Rowan scored runs in each of the first two innings, then broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to chase Tiger starter John Schoenholtz (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/McCallie) who worked five and two-thirds innings and allowed eight hits and just three earned runs but took the loss, just his second of the year and first as a starting pitcher. Five of Rowan’s seven runs in the sixth came with two outs and all five were unearned, while Prof first baseman Irv McFarland paced the attack with a pair of doubles, including a two-run shot off the left field wall that pushed the RU lead to 9-0. The Prof’s added the tenth run in the seventh off Tiger reliever Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) on a groundout by Frank Galeota, while Schwartz retired 15 of the last 17 Tiger batters in order. Tiger first baseman Tommy Burk (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun Valley) led the team with two hits in three at bats, while senior second baseman Mike Clark (Kinsale, VA/Washington and Lee) etched his name into the Tiger record books with his 142nd career hit in the second inning to become H-SC’s career hits leader. Hampden-Sydney, which had its nine game win streak snapped with the loss, returns to action in the second elimination game of the series at 2:15 pm eastern as the team faces the loser between third-ranked Wooster and fourth-ranked Cortland State. The contest will be broadcast live on FM 95.7 WFLO and on the internet. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
