SCHOENHOLTZ SETS RECORD AS H-SC SPLITS PAIR WITH RUTGERS-NEWARK HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (February 25, 2006)—Hampden-Sydney’s 12th-ranked baseball team split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader with Rutgers-Newark as the Tigers downed RNU, 6-0, in the first game before falling, 5-2, to the Scarlet Raiders in the second game. Tiger senior pitcher John Schoenholtz (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/McCallie) became the Tigers all-time leader in career victories with a shutout win in the first game. Hampden-Sydney (3-1) rode the arm of Schoenholtz to the 6-0 victory in game one as the All-American gave up just two hits and struck out four en route to picking up his second win of the year and the 18th of his career, establishing a new Hampden-Sydney career wins record in the process. Meanwhile, sophomore catcher David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) and senior leftfielder Luke Brankley (Onancock, VA/Nandua) each had two hits, while Toney drove in three and Brankley two in the victory. In game two, Rutgers-Newark (1-2) junior lefty Tom Reynolds out-dueled Tiger starter Larry Greene (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac). Reynolds worked five and one-third innings and allowed two runs on six hits, while walking four and striking out eight en route to stopping the Tigers for the first time this season. Greene lasted just two and one-thirds for the Tigers after allowing three earned runs on seven hits to go with four strikeouts. Meanwhile, senior Scott Barchetto allowed just one hit en route to picking up the save for the Scarlett Raiders. Rutgers used a four-run third inning to break the game open, thanks to a two-run homer by junior rightfielder Bill Mercurio, while senior catcher Mike Marcucci also drove in two runs in the inning as the Scarlet Raiders built a 5-0 lead. The Tigers rallied with a pair of runs in their half of the sixth as Luke Brankley walked to score Josh Davidson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) before Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) drove in a run with a groundout. The two teams will meet again Sunday in a doubleheader slated to begin at 1 pm at Yank Bernier Field. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
