TIGERS SLUG THEIR WAY PAST ST. MARY’S, 21-6

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 1, 2006)—Hampden-Sydney’s 12th-ranked baseball team pounded out a season-high 19 hits en route to a 21-6 victory over St. Mary’s College (Md.) Wednesday afternoon at Yank Bernier Field.  With the win the Tigers improve to 4-3 overall while the Seahawks fall to 2-4. 

The Tigers scored six runs in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead and never looked back, scoring four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, three in the sixth and two each in the seventh and eighth.  Sophomore second baseman Daniel Prieto (Wellington, FL/Cardinal Newman) led the way at the plate as he went 4-for-5 with four RBI, while junior designated hitter Josh Davidson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored and senior centerfield Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. 

Senior pitcher Jayson Hanky (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) picked up his first win of the year as he worked six innings and allowed just two runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking three for the Tigers.  Seniors Jeff Martin (Richmond, VA/Meadowbrook), Bryan Mangas (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) and freshman Kyle Simmers (Stevens City, VA/Serando) each worked one inning in relief to secure the win for Hampden-Sydney. 

St. Mary’s Brian Mills took the loss after working the first three and one-third innings and allowing ten runs (nine earned) on nine hits while striking out four and walking one. Designated hitter Michael Broccolino paced the Seahawks at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while first baseman Chris D’Antuono, rightfielder Ryan D’Antuono and shortstop Andrew Sohn each had two hits. 

In all, 23 different players made appearances in the game for the Tigers, including freshmen Jack Lytle (Lusby, MD/Patuxent), Evan Rogers (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird) and Luke Swiney (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) who each recorded his first collegiate hit. 

Hampden-Sydney returns to the diamond Saturday, March 4, as the Tigers travel to Virginia Beach, VA, to take on Virginia Wesleyan College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader starting at 12 pm.
