BASEBALL TIGERS DOUBLE UP ROANOKE WITH DH SWEEP

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 11, 2006)—Hampden-Sydney’s baseball team completed a Saturday sweep of Old Dominion Athletic Conference for Roanoke College as the Tigers downed the Maroons, 8-3 and 8-5.  The wins help keep the Tigers perfect in the ODAC as H-SC improved to 4-0 in league play and 9-4 overall while the Maroons drop to 7-7 and 0-2. 

Tiger senior pitcher John Schoenholtz (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/McCallie) improved to 4-0 overall on the year with a victory in game one as the All-American worked six innings and allowed nine hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out five and walking four.  Meanwhile, junior John Apperson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage), and seniors Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) and Tommy Burk (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County), the Tigers 2-through-4 hitters in the lineup, combined to go 7-for-11 at the plate with six RBI.  Meanwhile, Tiger leadoff hitter Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) scored three runs and nailed his first homer of the season on a solo blast in the sixth inning. 

Roanoke starter Andrew Lumsden took the loss after working six innings and allowing 11 hits and eight runs while walking just one and striking out four.  Roanoke’s Justin Bradley and Clint Zimmerman each recorded two hits in the contest, while Matt Vess and Sean Sturgill each drove in a run. 

In the second game, the Tigers built an 8-1 lead and held on to take the contest, 8-5.  Junior Larry Greene (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) got the win as he pitched seven innings and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out three and walking two.  Apperson and Burk remained hot at the plate as each went 3-for-5, while Burk had two triples and four RBI. 

Travis Andrews took the game two loss for the Maroons as he pitched four innings and gave up nine hits, six runs (four earned) and walked one and struck out one.  Second baseman Anthony Hernandez led the Maroons with two hits in the game, while first baseman Opey Clarke drove in two with a bases loaded hit in the eighth inning. 

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Monday when the Tigers host Christopher Newport University at 3 pm at Yank Bernier Field.
