HANKY PITCHES TIGERS PAST CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT, 3-1

Game Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 13, 2006)—Hampden-Sydney College senior pitcher Jayson Hanky (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) tossed a complete game en route to leading the Tigers to a 3-1 victory over Christopher Newport University Monday at Yank Bernier Field.  With the win the Tigers improve to 10-4 overall while the Captains fall to 8-7.

Hanky worked all nine innings and allowed one run on eight hits while walking one and striking out three as he improved to 2-1 overall on the year.  Meanwhile, CNU’s Eben Brower was the hard luck loser as he worked six innings and gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking one.

Christopher Newport gave Brower a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning thanks to a RBI double by designated hitter Mark Genovese.  The Tigers rallied with three runs off Brower in the bottom of the inning as senior centerfielder Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) delivered a RBI on his third single of the game, while senior first baseman Tommy Burk (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) doubled to score Padgett, then scored the third run of the game on a pinch-hit single by sophomore Josh Michael (Front Royal, VA/Warren County)

Hanky took care of the rest for Hampden-Sydney as he retired nine of the ten batters he faced in the final three innings en route to recording his second straight one-run, complete-game performance.

Padgett led all players with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, while first baseman John Corbin and left fielder Mike Giarrizzi each had two hits for the Captains.

Hampden-Sydney, winner of seven of its last eight games, returns to action Tuesday as the Tigers travel to Greensboro, NC, to take on Greensboro College at 3 pm.  The team then returns home for a 3 pm tilt with Southern Virginia at Yank Bernier Field on Wednesday.
