GREENSBORO, NC (March 14, 2006)—Greensboro College out slugged Hampden-Sydney College on the baseball diamond Tuesday as the Pride recorded 19 hits, including three homers, and downed the Tigers, 13-10.  The loss dropped the Tigers to 10-5 overall, while the Pride improved to 12-7. 

The top six batters in the Greensboro lineup produced 14 of the 19 hits the squad recorded on the day, while every starter had at least one base knock as the Pride built a 6-1 lead in the first inning and staved off the Tigers for the victory.   Meanwhile, first baseman Jess Maloney and catcher Taylor Kennedy blasted back-to-back homers in the sixth inning, while rightfielder Anthony Corona hit a two-run shot in the eighth. 

The Tigers countered with hot bats at the top of the order as the top four batters accounted for ten of the team’s 12 hits, including senior first baseman Tommy Burk (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) who went 4-for-4 with four RBI, while senior centerfielder Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) had three hits and drove in two.  Senior Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) meanwhile, swiped his 12^th base of the year in the second inning, giving him 53 stolen bases for his career and tying him atop the all-time list with Jody Williams ’86. 

Tiger sophomore Brock Ward (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) took the loss as he lasted just one and one-third innings and gave up eight runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking three batters.  Freshmen Hall Toledano (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro) and Matt Thornton (Richmond, VA/James River) worked the final six and two-thirds and combined to give up five runs on 12 hits while both struck out two batters. 

Chatham Bray scored the win on the hill for the Pride as he worked four innings and gave up six runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out three and walking three.   

The Tigers, who have played four games in the last four days, return to action Wednesday, March 15, as they host Southern Virginia University at 3 pm at Yank Bernier Field.
