BASEBALL TIGERS SCORE 10-4 WIN OVER SOUTHERN VIRGINIA HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 15, 2006)—Hampden-Sydney’s baseball team scored a 10-4 victory over Southern Virginia University Wednesday at Yank Bernier Field. With the win, the Tigers improve to 11-5 overall on the year while the Knights fall to 3-7. Tiger leadoff hitter Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) sparked the H-SC offense at the plate, where he was 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored, and on the base paths where he stole a pair of bases to give him 55 for his career, breaking the 20-year career stolen bases record at Hampden-Sydney previously held by Jody Williams ’86. Junior rightfielder John Apperson also went 4-for-5 at the plate and drove in a game-high three bases, while sophomore infielder Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) had three hits and two RBI on the day to help the Tiger cause. Senior pitcher Michael Hall (Leonardtown, MD/St. Mary’s-Ryken) picked up the win, his first since the 2004 season, as he worked five solid innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out three. Senior Jeff Martin (Richmond, VA/Meadowbrook) and sophomore Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) combined to work the final four innings and did not allow a run. Southern Virginia was led by infielders Greg Larsen and Robert Sandstrom, along with rightfielder Rick Packard as each had two hits on the day. Meanwhile, starting pitcher David Harrison took the loss as he gave up seven runs on 12 hits while striking out one and walking two. Hampden-Sydney returns to action Saturday as the Tigers travel to Ashland, VA, to take on Randolph-Macon College in a doubleheader starting at 12 pm. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
