BASEBALL TIGERS DROP PAIR AT RANDOLPH-MACON ASHLAND, VA (March 18, 2006)—Randolph-Macon’s baseball team swept a pair of games from Old Dominion Athletic Conference-rival Hampden-Sydney Saturday as the Yellow Jackets one the first game of the doubleheader, 9-2, and the second game, 7-2. With the wins, Randolph-Macon improves to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in the ODAC while the losses drop the Tigers to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Randolph-Macon took down Tiger All-American pitcher John Schoenholtz (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/McCallie) in the first game as the Yellow Jackets touched the senior for eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits in just four innings of work, handing him his first loss of the year. On the flip side, Randolph-Macon starter Bo Garner, got the win as he held the Tigers to two runs on eight hits over six innings of work. The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in each of the first, fourth and fifth innings en route to the victory. Freshman second baseman Greg Meleski and junior first baseman Brian Rogers each collected three hits, while Meleski and senior DH Seth Rapoza each drove in three runs for R-MC. Rapoza’s came on a three-run homer in the first inning, while freshman catcher B.J. Wickham blasted a two-run shot of his own in the bottom of the fifth. Senior first baseman Tommy Burk (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) and sophomore DH Josh Michael (Front Royal, VA/Warren County) each had two hits for the Tigers, who stranded nine base-runners in the game, as sophomore third baseman Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) was the only player to drive in runs for H-SC as he knocked in a pair in the sixth inning. In game two, Randolph-Macon starter Travis Beazley cruised to his fifth win of the year as he worked all nine innings and did not allow an earned run while giving up four hits, striking out 11 and walking two. Hampden-Sydney junior Larry Greene (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) took the loss, his second of the year, as he allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits while walking five and striking out four. Sophomore Chris Dykes, along with freshmen Harold Baines, Jr., and Rusty Linville each drove in two runs to lead the Yellow Jackets at the plate. Linville meanwhile, hit the Yellow Jackets third homer of the day with a solo blast in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Tigers were paced by a two-run first inning single by sophomore second baseman Daniel Prieto (Wellington, FL/Cardinal Newman).
