VILLA JULIE DOWNS BASEBALL TIGERS, 13-2 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 19, 2006)—Villa Julie College exploded for 13 runs on 14 hits as the Mustangs downed Hampden-Sydney, 13-2, Sunday afternoon at Yank Bernier Field. With the win, Villa Julie improves to 6-8 overall, while the Tigers drop their third straight game and fall to 11-8. Eight of the nine starters in the Villa Julie lineup had at least one hit, while third baseman Matt Waltrop had three as the Mustangs opened a 6-0 lead through three innings and never looked back. Rightfielder Kevin Rodgers led all batters with three RBI, while first baseman Wade Keenan and centerfielder Jimmy Smith each drove in two as the Mustang offense was more than enough to support pitcher Gary Sanders who worked all nine innings and allowed two runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out three. Sophomore’s Josh Davidson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) paced the Tiger offense with two hits each, while Davidson and senior first baseman Tommy Burk (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) each drove in a run. Tiger starter Jayson Hanky (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) took his second loss of the year as he allowed eight runs (six earned) on seven hits, while striking out six and walking two through seven and one-third innings of work. Hampden-Sydney will look to snap its three-game skid Tuesday as the Tigers host Averett University at 3 pm at Yank Bernier Field. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
