BASEBALL TIGERS SWEEP EMORY & HENRY, 12-4, 16-6 EMORY, VA (April 9, 2006)—Hampden-Sydney’s baseball team recorded a sweep of Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Emory and Henry on Sunday as the Tigers won the first game of a doubleheader, 12-4, and the second game, 16-6. With the wins, the Tigers improve to 16-13 overall and 8-5 in the ODAC, while the Wasps fall to 6-20 and 3-11. The Tiger bats were on fire in both games as the team built big leads on the Wasps. In game one, Hampden-Sydney used a nine run second inning and built a 12-0 lead to cruise to the victory and then recorded three four-run innings in game two en route to the 16-6 win. With the victories, the Tigers recorded their first back-to-back wins since downing Roanoke and Christopher Newport on March 11 and 13. Senior pitcher John Schoenholtz (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/McCallie) picked up his sixth win of the year on the hill in game one, working six and two thirds innings while allowing four runs (three earned) on 12 hits, with four strikeouts and one walk. Emory and Henry starter Adam Hall took the loss after allowing nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits while walking five and striking out three. Sophomore catcher David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) led the way at the plate for the Tigers with a double, homer and four RBI. Senior first baseman Tommy Burk (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) and sophomore third baseman Josh Michael (Front Royal, VA/Warren County) each recorded two hits and drove in three runs, while Schoenholtz had a pair of hits in the designated hitter role. Hall paced the Wasps with a two-run homer, while first baseman Casey Burcham had two hits and scored two runs. In the second game the Tigers scored four runs in each of the third, fifth and sixth innings while smacking three homers to roll to the doubleheader sweep. Senior center fielder Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown), junior right fielder John Apperson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and John Schoenholtz each drove in three runs, while Apperson had two doubles, a triple, a walk and scored four runs. Schoenholtz led the homer barrage as he smacked his second of the season, a two-run shot, in the top of the first inning to give Hampden-Sydney a 3-0 lead. Sophomore shortstop Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) then led off the fourth inning with a solo shot, the first of his career, while Tommy Burk capped off the parade with a two-run blast in the fifth-inning to give him a team-high 28 RBI on the year. Hall and Burcham again led the way at the plate for the Wasps as Hall recorded five hits in six at bats, while both players drove in three runs. Tiger sophomore reliever Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) got the win on the mound after working the final five innings and allowing four runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out five. He came on in relief of starter Larry Greene (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) who worked the first four innings and allowed just two runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out five. Wasp starter Tyler Kelting took the loss after giving up eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits while walking four and striking out five. The Tigers return to action Tuesday, April 11, when the squad hosts Lynchburg College at 3 pm at Yank Bernier Field. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
