BASEBALL TIGERS SPLIT WITH AVERETT

Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score

DANVILLE, VA (February 9, 2008)—After falling 2-1 in extra innings in game one of their Saturday doubleheader with Averett University, Hampden-Sydney's Baseball Tigers earned their first win of the season with a 9-6 victory in game two. The Tigers left Danville with a 1-3 record on the young season, while Averett finished their opening day at 1-1.

In game one, Hampden-Sydney took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on catcher David Toney's solo home run. Held scoreless over the first five innings by Tigers' ace Daniel Hadra, the Cougars knotted the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, when an Eric Sibrizzi sacrifice fly scored Ahmed Shelton.

With the score still steady at 1-1, Averett finally broke through in the bottom of the ninth, when Cougar first baseman Ken Kellum drove his game-winning, RBI single into right field, scoring Sibrizzi and giving the homestanding Cougars the 2-1, extra inning victory.

For the Tigers in game one, Hadra pitched 8 1/3 strong, scattering eight hits and striking out eight while walking just one batter. Toney finished 2 for 4 at the plate including his solo shot in the Tigers' half of the second.

In game two, Hampden-Sydney broke a 6-6 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh to claim a 9-6 victory and earn the split.

Averett took an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the first, only to see Hampden-Sydney crawl back within one run after two innings thanks in part to Toney's second solo home run of the afternoon.

The Tigers took a 6-4 into the sixth inning, spurred by catcher Alnor Rodriguez's two-run double in the third and a Luke Swiney RBI double in the fourth. After Averett climbed back to even with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers exploded for three runs in their half of the seventh. Hampden-Sydney third baseman Daniel Prieto connected on an RBI single and second baseman Alan Appling followed with a two-run single to account for the final 9-6 margin of victory.

Tigers' pitcher Robbie Bailey earned his first win of the season, allowing one run on three hits in two innings of relief for starter Bryan Breedlove.

Hampden-Sydney will return to action tomorrow, Feb. 10 as the Tigers host St. Mary's. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
