BASEBALL TIGERS DROP ROAD CONTEST AT CNU, 11-0 NEWPORT NEWS, VA (February 12, 2008)—Hampden-Sydney's baseball team was only able to manage one hit, while Christopher Newport earned 11 runs on 17 hits to claim an 11-0 victory over the Tigers at Captains Park. The Tigers and Captains battled to a 0-0 tie through three innings, but Christopher Newport used an eight-run inning in the bottom of the fourth to earn the win. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney drops to 1-5 on the season, while the Captains improve to 1-0 overall. Hampden-Sydney starting pitcher Robbie Bailey (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) took the loss for the Tigers as he worked three and one-third innings, allowing eight runs on ten hits and four walks. Tiger sophomore Matt Daniel (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) had a solid one and two-thirds inning out of the bullpen for Hampden-Sydney, giving up no runs on three hits while striking out one. Kenny Moreland earned the victory for Christopher Newport as the starter worked five scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while striking out six. The Tigers and Captains battled to a 0-0 tie through three and a half innings, but Christopher Newport tallied eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-0 advantage. The Captains would add three more runs in the seventh to produce the 11-0 victory. Junior Hall Toledano (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro) was the lone Tiger to earn a hit as he doubled in the fifth inning. Senior David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) drew two walks on the afternoon, while freshman A.J. Prill (Midlothian, VA/James River) also reached on a walk. Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Thursday, February 14, as the Tigers will welcome Mary Washington to Yank Bernier Field.
