BASEBALL TIGERS FALL TO MARY WASHINGTON, 8-2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (February 14, 2008)—The Hampden-Sydney baseball team dropped its fourth consecutive home game on Thursday afternoon as the Mary Washington Eagles earned an 8-2 victory over the Tigers at Yank Bernier Field.  Mary Washington held a 1-0 lead through four innings but added three runs in the top of the fifth and seventh innings en route to the win.  The Tigers were able to manage eight hits but tallied five errors and left 15 runners on base.  With the loss, Hampden-Sydney drops to 1-6 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 1-0 overall.

Mary Washington took an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the third inning as the Eagles' Riley Gorman scored on a Tiger throwing error.  Mary Washington would add to their lead in the top of the fifth as the Eagles scored three runs to take a 4-0 advantage.  In the top of the seventh, Jon Sims hit a three-run homer to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.  The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the eighth as A.J. Prill (Midlothian, VA/James River) scored on a Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) single to make the score 7-1.  Trailing 8-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Hampden-Sydney was only able to score one run as David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) scored on a single by Hall Toledano (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro), giving the Eagles the 8-2 victory.

Hampden-Sydney starting pitcher Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) took the loss for the Tigers as he worked six innings, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks.  Hadra also struck out two.  Wes Hayden earned the victory for Mary Washington as the starter worked six scoreless innings, allowing only six hits while striking out four.

Junior Hall Toledano led the Tigers at the plate as he went 2-for-5 with one RBI.  Sophomore Alan Appling (Houston, TX/Houston Christian) and freshman A.J. Prill went 1-for-3 with Prill scoring one run.

Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Saturday, February 16, as the Tigers will welcome Villa Julie to Yank Bernier Field for a doubleheader.  The first pitch for Saturday's game is scheduled to be thrown at 12:00 pm.
