HAMPDEN-SYDNEY SPLITS PAIR WITH VILLA JULIE

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (February 16, 2008)—Hampden-Sydney split their doubleheader with Villa Julie on Saturday afternoon at Yank Bernier Field.  After falling 8-6 in game one, the Tigers picked up a 2-1 victory in game two. After the series split, Hampden-Sydney is now 2-7 on the season, while the Mustangs are currently 1-1 overall.

In game one, Hampden-Sydney took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as sophomore Alnor Rodriguez (Orlando, FL/Hargrave Military Academy) drove in two runs with a double.  After being held scoreless through five innings, the Mustangs scored four runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to take an 8-3 lead heading into the final frame.  In the bottom of the seventh, freshman A.J. Prill (Midlothian, VA/James River) singled to knock in two runs, but Hampden-Sydney was only able to get three across, falling to Villa Julie, 8-6.

Tiger starter Bryan Breedlove (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) took the loss for Hampden-Sydney after working six and one-third innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits, while striking out seven.  Wade Keenan earned the victory, working six and two-thirds innings, while Alex Laddbush earned the save for the Mustangs.

In game two, the Tigers jumped out to another early lead, taking a 2-0 advantage as Rodriguez and Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) crossed the plate in the bottom of the first.  The mustangs answered with one run in the top of the second.  Neither team was able to produce any runs over the next five innings, giving the Tigers the 2-1 win.

Sophomore Robbie Bailey (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) earned the complete game victory for Hampden-Sydney as he gave up one run, while scattering nine hits in seven innings of action.  Buddy Breidenbaugh took the loss for the mustangs, giving up two runs on just three hits in six innings of work.

Rodriguez led the Tigers at the plate, going 3-for-6 on the day with two RBI and one run scored.  Also turning in a solid performance was Todd Harrell, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.  The Mustangs were led by George Papuchis as he went 4-for-6 on the afternoon with four RBI and two runs scored

Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Friday, February 22, as the Tigers will host the 2008 Floyd B. Cox Tournament.  In the first game, Rutgers-Camden and Moravian will play at 11:00 am.  Hampden-Sydney will take on Waynesburg in game two, scheduled to start at approximately 3:00 pm.
