BASEBALL TIGERS SWEEP WAYNESBURG
Game One Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (February 23, 2008)—Hampden-Sydney College recorded a pair of victories over Waynesburg Saturday afternoon as the Tigers scored 7-1 and 7-4 victories over the Yellow Jackets at Yank Bernier Field in the 2008 Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament. In game one, the Tigers and Pride were tied at 1-1, but Hampden-Sydney scored six runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning to earn the 7-1 victory. In game two, Waynesburg led Hampden-Sydney 4-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Tigers rallied for six runs with two outs to claim the 7-4 win. With the pair of victories, Hampden-Sydney improved to 4-7 overall, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 0-3 on the season. In game one, the Tigers earned a complete-game victory from starting pitcher Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) as the senior gave up one run in in seven innings of work, scattering five hits while striking out seven. Bryan Leones took the loss as he gave up seven runs in three and two-thirds innings of work. In the second game, Tiger reliever Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Hereford) earned the victory as he worked three scoreless innings, allowing two hits in the victory. Hampden-Sydney's sophomore starting pitcher Bryan Breedlove (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) earned the no decision, while Waynesburg's Steve Hubsch took the loss. Waynesburg jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but the Tigers answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third as sophomore catcher Alnor Rodriguez (Orlando, FL/Hargrave Military Academy) scored. With the game tied, 1-1, heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Hampden-Sydney scored six runs with two outs to take a 7-1 lead. In the top of the seventh, closed the game out with three consecutive strikeouts to give Hampden-Sydney the 7-1 win. In the second game, Waynesburg took a 4-0 advantage in the top of the fourth inning on six hits and one error. In the bottom of the fourth, David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) scored on a double by Hall Toledano (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro) to cut the lead to three runs. Trailing 4-1 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Hampden-Sydney's Ryan Daniel (Yanceyville, NC/Bartlett Yancey) singled to start a six-run rally to give the Tigers a 7-4 lead heading into the final inning. In the top of the seventh, Watkins got the Yellow Jackets out in order to seal the 7-4 victory. Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Sunday, February 24, as the Tigers will host Waynesburg College on the final day of the 2008 Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament.
