BASEBALL TIGERS SPLIT PAIR WITH MARLINS IN ODAC OPENER

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (MARCH 1, 2008)—The Hampden-Sydney baseball team captured a 7-5 victory over Virginia Wesleyan College in the first game of a doubleheader against the Marlins on Saturday afternoon.  The Marlins won the second game, scoring an 11-0 victory to split the series in the ODAC opener for both schools.  With the split, Hampden-Sydney moves to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while Virginia Wesleyan is now 7-2 on the season and 1-1 in the league. 

Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of game one, but the Tigers got runs from junior Luke Swiney (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and sophomore Alnor Rodriguez (Orlando, FL/Hargrave Military Academy) to cut the Marlin lead to one run, 3-2.  Trailing by a score of 5-2, the Tigers scored two runs in the top of the fifth and one run in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 5-5 and send the game into extra innings.  In the top of the eighth inning, Hall Toledano (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro) and Daniel Prieto (Wellington, FL/Cardinal Newman) scored to help give Hampden-Sydney the 7-5 victory.

Tiger starter Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) earned the complete game victory for Hampden-Sydney, giving up five runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in eight innings of work.  Starter David Imperato earned the no decision for the Marlins, allowing four runs on four hits in six innings of work.  Chris Deanes took the loss for the Marlins, giving up two runs in one-third of an innings work. 

In the second game, Virginia Wesleyan took an early 4-0 lead through the first two innings and never looked back en route to an 11-0 victory.  The Marlins scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added several more late to claim the win.

Sophomore starter Robbie Bailey (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) took the loss for Hampden-Sydney as he gave up four runs on five hits in four innings of action. Virginia Wesleyan's Gary Bulman earned the win for the Marlins as he worked six scoreless innings, allowing only four hits while striking out five.

Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Wednesday, March 5, as the Tigers will travel to Lexington, VA to face the Washington and Lee Generals in an ODAC match-up.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
