BASEBALL TIGERS DROP ROAD CONTEST TO W&L, 7-4 LEXINGTON, VA (March 5, 2008)—The Hampden-Sydney baseball team dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference road contest to Washington and Lee, 7-4, at Smith Field in Lexington, VA on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers cut the Generals' lead to one run, 4-3, heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Generals scored one run in the sixth and two runs in the eighth to claim the victory. With the loss, the Tigers drop to 6-9 on the season and 1-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the Generals improve to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the league. Hampden-Sydney starting pitcher Bryan Breedlove (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) earned the no decision for the Tigers as he worked five and two-thirds innings, striking out six and allowing three runs, only one earned. Sophomore John West (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) was the hard-luck loser for Hampden-Sydney as he worked two and one-thirds innings, giving up four runs on eight hits. Steve Marcott earned the victory for Washington and Lee, working the five innings, giving up two run on three hits. The Tigers took an early lead against the Generals, as sophomore outfielder Ben Brawley (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) drove in sophomore designated hitter Alnor Rodriguez (Orlando, FL/Hargrave Military Academy) to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead. The Generals answered with two runs in the first and one run in the second and third innings to take a 4-1 lead, but Hampden-Sydney answered with a run in the fifth and sixth inning to cut the lead to one run, 4-3. Leading 5-4, the Generals scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth which proved to be more than enough as they went on for the 7-4 win. Junior Hall Toledano (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro) led the Tigers at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Rodriguez finished the day at 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while senior David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) went 1-for-2 with one RBI. Sophomore Nick Price (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) was 1-for-4 with one run scored. Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Thursday, March 6, as the Tigers will host Piedmont at Yank Bernier Field.
