BASEBALL TIGERS DROP PAIR AT RANDOLPH-MACON
Game 1 Box Score ASHLAND, VA (March 9, 2008)—The Hampden-Sydney baseball team dropped two games in a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference contests to Randolph-Macon in Ashland, VA on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers dropped the first game, 5-4, in extra innings as Randolph-Macon scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs. In game two, Randolph-Macon took a 5-3 victory, using three runs in the third and two runs in the fifth en route to the win. With the losses, Hampden-Sydney dropped to 6-12 overall and 1-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while Randolph-Macon improved to 8-7 overall and 2-0 in the league.Senior Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) earned the no decision in game one. The senior worked six and one-third innings, giving up four runs on 11 hits with eight strikeouts. Tiger sophomore Bryan Breedlove (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) took the loss after working the final one and one-third inning, giving up one run on two hits. The Yellow Jackets took an early lead with one run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Tigers tied the game, 1-1, with a single run in the top of the third. Trailing 3-1, Hampden-Sydney scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 lead. Randolph-Macon tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth with two outs to claim the 5-4 victory. Sophomore Robbie Bailey (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) took the loss for the Tigers in game two, working eight innings. Bailey gave up five runs on nine hits with six strikeouts. Randolph-Macon took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, but the Tigers answered with one run in the fifth inning to cut the lead to two runs, 3-1. Randolph-Macon extended its lead to 5-1 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Trailing 5-1, the Tigers scored two runs in the top of the eighth, but it was not enough as Randolph-Macon captured the 5-3 victory. Senior David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) led the Tigers at the plate as he went 3-for-6 with one run scored and three RBI. Ryan Daniel (Yanceyville, NC/Yancey-Bartlett) went 1-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI, while freshman first baseman Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) went 3-for-8 in two games. Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Tuesday, March 11, as the Tigers will travel to Rocky Mount, NC to take on North Carolina Wesleyan.
