BASEBALL TIGERS DROP DECISION TO METHODIST, 8-4

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (March 12, 2008)—Methodist took an early 4-0 lead over the Hampden-Sydney baseball team on Wednesday afternoon and went on for the 8-4 victory.  The Tigers cut the lead to just two runs, 4-2, in the top of the second inning, but Methodist scored four runs over the final seven innings to help secure the win.  With the loss, Hampden-Sydney fell to 7-13 overall, while the Monarchs improve to 15-6 on the season.

Methodist took an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Hampden-Sydney answered with two runs in the top of the second inning to cut the Monarch lead to two runs, 4-2.  Methodist scored single runs in the bottom of the second, fourth, fifth and seventh inning to build an 8-2 lead heading into the top of the ninth inning.  The Tigers would manage two runs in the top of the ninth but it was not enough as Methodist took the 8-4 win.

Freshman pitcher Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Hereford) took the loss of the Tigers as the starter gave up five runs on six hits and three walks in two innings of work.  In relief, sophomore John West (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) pitched four innings, allowing two runs on two hits, while senior Brock Ward (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) worked two innings, giving up two hits and one run.  Landon Jordan earned the victory for the Monarchs, giving up two runs on six hits in seven innings of action.

Senior right fielder Matt Venezuela (Suffolk, VA/Norfolk Collegiate) led the Tigers at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with one RBI, while Hall Toledano (Asheville, NC/Asheville) went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.  Freshman first baseman Justin Hebert (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) went 1-for-2 on the afternoon.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Thursday, March 13 as the Tigers travel to Greensboro, NC to take on Greensboro College. First pitch for Thursday's game is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
