BASEBALL TIGERS SPLIT ODAC PAIR WITH BRIDGEWATER
Game One Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 15, 2008)—The Hampden-Sydney baseball team fell to Bridgewater, 4-5, in extra innings in the first game of a doubleheader against the Eagles on Saturday afternoon, but the Tigers won the second game, scoring 7-4 victory to split the series. With the split, Hampden-Sydney moves to 8-15 overall and 2-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while Bridgewater is 8-6-1 on the season and 2-3 in the league. Bridgewater jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of game one, but the Tigers answered with two runs of their own to tie the game, 2-2, after two innings of play. The Eagles added one run the top of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore outfielder Ben Brawley (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 3-3. In extra innings, Bridgewater scored two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 5-3 lead. In the Tigers' portion of the eighth inning, junior Evan Rogers (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird) scored on a Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) single to cut the lead to one run, 5-4, but the Tigers could not cross the plate again, falling to the Eagles, 5-4, in extra innings. Tiger starter Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) took the loss for Hampden-Sydney. The senior worked seven and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. Hadra walked only one Eagle, while striking out eight batters. Nolan Shaffer earned the victory for the Eagles, giving up three runs on three hits in seven innings work. Fred Duquette worked the final inning, allowing one run on three hits to earn the save for Bridgewater. In the second game, Hampden-Sydney scored two runs in the bottom of the first, second, and fourth innings to take an early 6-0 lead. Trailing 6-1 heading into the top of the sixth inning, Bridgewater scored three runs to cut the Tiger lead to two runs, 6-4. Over the final three innings, the Tigers added one run and shut out the Eagles to claim the 7-4 victory. Sophomore starter Robbie Bailey (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) earned the win for Hampden-Sydney as he gave up four runs on nine hits in six innings of action. Sophomore Bryan Breedlove (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) worked three innings, allowing no runs and two hits to earn the save for the Tigers. Bridgewater's Alex Foltz took the loss for the Eagles as he worked six innings, allowing six runs on 13 hits. Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Wednesday, March 19, as the Tigers will welcome Christopher Newport to Yank Bernier Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
