SHENANDOAH CAPTURES 12-2 WIN OVER BASEBALL TIGERS

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 20, 2008)—Shenandoah scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to build an early 4-0 advantage and went on to earn the 12-2 decision over the Tigers at Yank Bernier Field on Thursday afternoon.  The Tigers managed seven hits on the afternoon but gave up 17 hits and committed three errors in the losing effort.  With the loss, Hampden-Sydney drops to 8-16 on the season, while Shenandoah improves to 11-10 overall.

Shenandoah struck first, scoring a run in the top of the third inning to take an early lead.  The Hornets would add three runs in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead before the Tigers' David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) scored to cut the lead to four runs, 5-1.  The Hornets pushed their lead to eight runs, 9-1, before Alnor Rodriguez (Orlando, FL/Hargrave Military Academy) hit a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 9-2.  The Hornets crossed the plate three times in the ninth to claim the 12-2 decision.

Sophomore Bryan Breedlove (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) took the loss for the Tigers as he gave up one unearned run in one inning of work.  The Tigers used nine pitchers on the afternoon.  For Shenandoah, Matthew Davis earns the complete-game victory, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out eight batters.

Senior Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) led the Hampden-Sydney offense, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Senior David Toney and sophomore Ben Brawley (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) went 1-for-2 on the afternoon as Toney scored one run.  Junior Luke Swiney (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) got a hit in his only appearance at the plate.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Saturday, March 22 as the Tigers will welcome Guilford College to Yank Bernier Field for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader.  First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
