HADRA'S ARM AND RODRIGUEZ'S BAT LEAD TIGERS TO SWEEP OF ODAC DOUBLEHEADER WITH GUILFORD
Game One Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 22, 2008)—The Hampden-Sydney baseball team received solid performances for senior pitcher Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) and sophomore catcher Alnor Rodriguez (Orlando, FL/Hargrave Military Academy) to sweep the Guilford Quakers in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader at Yank Bernier Field on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers captured a 2-0 win in the first game and came back from a 4-1 deficit to earn a 5-4 win in the second game. With the sweep, Hampden-Sydney improves to 10-16 overall and 4-5 in the ODAC, while Guilford drops to 12-13 overall and 2-6 in the league. In first game of the afternoon, Hampden-Sydney took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning as freshman Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) and senior Daniel Prieto (Wellington, FL/Cardinal Newman) scored to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. Over the next four innings, Guilford would only manage two hits as the Tigers would capture the 2-0 win. Tiger starter Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) earned the win for Hampden-Sydney. The senior worked all seven innings, allowing no runs on only two hits. Hadra no had walks but struck out eight batters. Ryan Hairston took the loss for the Quakers, giving up two runs on six hits in six innings work. In the second game, Hampden-Sydney scored one run in the bottom of the second inning to take an early lead, but Guilford answered with two runs in the top of the third and sixth innings to take a three run lead. Trailing 4-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tigers scored one run to cut the lead to two runs, 4-2, and in the bottom of the seventh inning, Rodriguez hit a solo home run to cut the lead to one, 4-3. In the bottom of the ninth, Rodriguez tripled to score sophomore Alan Appling (Houston, TX/Houston Christian) and senior Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) singled to score Daniel Venezuela (Suffolk, VA/Alliance Christian) to give the Tigers the thrilling 5-4 come-from-behind victory. Sophomore starter Robbie Bailey (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) earned the no decision as he gave up four runs on six hits in five innings of action. Sophomore reliever Bryan Breedlove (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) earned the win, allowing no runs and only three hits in the final four innings of work. Guilford's Paul Keenan took the loss for the Quakers, giving up two runs on two hits in the final inning. On the afternoon, Rodriguez went 4-for-8 with three RBI and one run scored. Zach Harrelson went 4-for-5 for the Tigers with two runs scored, while Daniel Prieto was 3-for-6 on the afternoon with two RBI and one run scored. Guilford's Phil Drew finished the afternoon going 5-for-6 with one run scored. Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Monday, March 24, as the Tigers will welcome North Carolina Wesleyan to Yank Bernier Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
