BASEBALL TIGERS BEAT CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT, 8-4

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 27, 2008)—Hampden-Sydney
jumped out to an early 7-0 lead over Christopher Newport through five innings and
held on for the 8-4 win on Thursday afternoon at Yank Bernier Field. Both
teams registered 13 hits on the afternoon, but the Captains committed two errors
in the loss. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 11-17 overall, while
the Captains drop to 18-5 on the season.

The Tigers took an early lead in the
top of the first inning as Hampden-Sydney's David Toney
(Mechanicsville, VA/Lee Davis) drove in Luke Swiney (Richmond,
VA/Mills Godwin) to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage. The
Tigers would add one run in the bottom of the second and two runs in the
bottom of the third to take a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Hampden-Sydney scored three more runs
to take a 7-0 advantage. Christopher Newport got on the scoreboard
in the top of the sixth with one run to make the score 7-1.
Trailing 8-1, the Captains scored one run in the top of the eighth and
two runs in the ninth, but that would be all they could manage as the
Tigers went on for the 8-4 win.
Hampden-Sydney starter John West (Lanexa,
VA/Lafayette) earned the win for the Tigers as he worked seven
innings, allowing one run on seven hits, while striking out six
batters. Brandon Berry took the loss for the Captains as the starter
worked four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.
Seniors Todd Harrell (Chesapeake,
VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) and David Toney led Hampden-Sydney at the
plate as each went 2-for-3 on the afternoon. Toney scored one run
and had two RBI. Sophomore Nick Price (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls)
and senior Daniel Prieto (Wellington, FL/Cardinal Newman) went
2-for-5 on the afternoon with two runs scored, while Swiney went 1-for-2
with two runs scored and one RBI. Sophomore Ben Brawley (Leesburg,
VA/Loudoun County) went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Saturday,
March 29, as the Tigers will travel to Emory, VA to face ODAC-foe Emory
and Henry in a conference doubleheader. The first pitch for Saturday's
game is scheduled for 12:00 pm. |
