BASEBALL TIGERS BLANKED BY LYNCHBURG, 9-0 LYNCHBURG, VA (April 2, 2008)—Lynchburg College took an early 4-0 lead over the Hampden-Sydney baseball team after one inning and went on for the 9-0 victory at Fox Field on Wednesday afternoon. Lynchburg scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and added five more runs over the final seven innings to secure the 9-0 win. With the loss, the Tigers fell to 13-18 overall and 6-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the Hornets improve to 21-7 on the season and 10-1 in the league. Lynchburg took an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Hornets would add one run in the bottom of the fourth inning and two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a commanding 7-0 advantage. The Hornets would push their lead to nine runs as they scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin, 9-0. Sophomore starter Bryan Breedlove (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) took the loss of the Tigers as he gave up nine runs on 15 hits and one walk in eight innings of work. Breedlove was able to strike out four batters. Jon Nichols earned the victory for Lynchburg, working eight scoreless innings, allowing only five hits and one walk while striking out seven. Senior Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) led the Tigers at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance, while senior Daniel Prieto (Wellington, FL/Cardinal Newman) went 1-for-3 on the day. Senior David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) and junior Luke Swiney (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) went 1-for-4 for the Tigers on the afternoon. Hampden-Sydney returns to action Thursday, April 3 as the Tigers welcome Methodist University to Yank Bernier Field.
